READING HABIT

                                                READING HABIT

To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all the miseries of life.. A good book is considered panacea for mental agony one suffers during day-to-day life.

With the technological advancements in the satellite era, reading habit is said to have taken a beating, or it seems. But that is not the case as reading had never been a habit of common people. What seems to have changed over the years is the taste of youngsters who are more inclined to light readings with the plot they identify themselves with than the one loaded with philosophical anecdotes. Again, it depends on their taste. Some researchers reached to a few youngsters to feel their pulse on the issue and found that they read every kind of authors, from Charles Dickens to Paulo Coelho.

Kids and young adults seem to be getting inclined to books once again in search of best friends. While a whole generation considers itself to be of 'Harry Potter' (HP) generation and would feel offended if you did not know who 'The Dark Lord' is (for those who actually don't know, he's the baddie in HP series and Harry's biggest adversary), popularity-wise it has a close contest with 'The Twilight Saga', as girls swoon over vampires (Edward Cullen) and werewolves (Jacob Black).

Do you like reading ? Why or why not ?

What you were reading when you were younger, and what do you read as a students ?

  1. Well, yes I like reading. As it is said in the presentation it's a good way to escape from the routine. But it is also a good way to widen horizons and bring knowledge about people and world. I find reading pretty inspiring and enriching. When I was young I loved reading adventure books with some mysterious characters and plots. Now I'm more into realistic literature, telling the stories about how it realy is in some other parts of the world. Still, I love the element of fantasy and imagination to be involved.

I used to read "Harry Potter" books, and "The Chronicles of Narnia". Now I prefer "Lord of the ring" and over J.R.R.Tolkien's books. I am reading books about mithology, criminals, psychological, fantasy , historical and more.

  4. Oh yeah, I like reading!:-) I think that reading is probably one of the most beneficial and feasible activities that a man can do. Firstly book furnishes relaxation to our mind and soul. What is more reading is relaxing, and it is also a way for children to reach out to the world. It is no secret that reading increases children’s vocabulary and spelling more than talking or direct teaching. Reading books require readers to think and imagine about different details in the book such as characters and plot.Everyone knows that a person who reads will be successful and a person who doesn’t will either not do so well than others or eventually fail in life.
I like reading romance novel and criminals. But to be honest I like every kind of books.

  5. I’m a reader and I always have a book in my hand. When I was younger, I used to enjoy more comics and video games than novels. I like a lot of american psychological crime (Richard Stark and Jim Thompson), everything by Michel Houellebecq, B.E. Ellis, Kurt Vonnegutt, most of Stanislaw Lem, H. P. Lovecraft, PKD, JG Ballard. Right now I'm reading mostly books about philosophy of mind and cognitive science, but there's allway a room for contemporary fiction.

  7. I like reading, because it let me follow my hobbies and deepen my knowledge about the world or about topics, which are interesting for me. It also let me be up to date. I find it as wat of relax time. When I was a child and before 15, I read simply books for girls, set books and fantasy books. Later and now - e-books for classes and sometimes something connected with my interests.

When I was younger (about 10-12 years old) I love Niziurski’s books, after I discover fantasy. It was love at first sight and last up to present. At middle school I was reading Harry Potter and Sapkowski. Since high school my favorite writer has been Terry Pratchett.

  11. I love reading. I think I like reading because it exercises my imagination. And maybe that's also the reason why I don't read realistic novels very much. I like reading about things that don't really exist, of stories that can't possibly happen. When I was a child I read "The Children from Bullerbyn village". I read it many times and now I also think it is really good book for every person.

  13. Yes, I like reading, actulally it's one of my favorites ways of spending free time. I read everything I can everywhere I can. I think that russian literature is one of the best of the world so it is something that I'm reading now and I have never read it as a child. When I was younger I enjoyed a lot fantasy books like Harry Potter or the Witcher. I like the influence the books have on your imagination and your ability to speak properly and I think it is really important to read at least 100 pages every day.

I was staying in the room for the whole day and parents just brought me food. Unfortunately, I don't have much free time to do the same things now, but I really can't wait the end of exams. I have a long list of books to read during the holidays. It start with Polsh books from the Interwar. That's one of my favourite momentss in history.

  15. I love reading books. It makes me forget about all the problems after exhausting week. Unfortunately, sometimes I am too tired to even open a book and when I have time I just go to sleep. My studies make it very difficult for me to do things I like. Reading in public transport is a way to reconcile reading and my tight schedule.

Last week I was on Warsaw Book Fair on the National Stadium. It was a great opportunity to buy some books in discount prices, meet some authors and see what's new in the books world. There were many exhibitors and there was no time to lose. It's a great event for bookworms, I want to go there next year again.

When I was youger I liked Six Bullerby Children, Winnie the Pooh and Little Nicholas series. Now I sentimentalise the Nicholas series and I still love that sense of humour. I do not have one particular favourite kind of books but majority of the books I read is related to East Asia in some ways. Often I read things that my friend recommend me - they have really good taste and I was never disappointed with their choices. Recently, I am reading Phillip K. Dick's 'The Counter-Clock World' and 'The Cambridge History of Japan'. Both of them are really good and if it weren't for the exams, I would finish them as soon as possible.

  18. When I was a kid I read the most popular series of that time - Harry Potter, but adventure books have never been my favourite. Than my mom gave me The Princess Diaries and I fell in love with girly books often written by american authors. Next step at age 13 was Gossip Girl which remains my favourite saga of all time. No matter what I read, I always put myself as a main character and when I finish a book I don't know what to do with myself, I must find another book.

Single-sex education

A little bit of history Single-sex education was traditional and dominating form of education till 19th century. Almost all schools and universities were single sex, which in almost all cases meant – men’s schools. This situation started to change because of two reasons: emancipation of women (fight for equality) and introduction of massive education. The first mixed-sex boarding school in UK was formed in 1818, it was Scottish Dollar Academy, and in 1878 the first university- University College London, allowed women  to enter on equal terms with men. What is interesting, the first Cambridge collage, which admit men and women was founded only on  1964. Pros and cons The topic of single-sex education is quite controversial. Like always there are pros and cons, some of them are quite irrational, other have a scientific background. The most popular arguments for single-sex education: 1. Boys and girls are learning in the different way, so they need different progr
THE MOST TRUSTED  PROFESSIONS Many people say that their job is important for our society, but is it a trustworthy profession? A market research institute asked people about trustworthy professions. Here you will find its results. The Top Five Most Trusted Professions 1. Firefighters A 2009 poll conducted by market research institute GfK found that firefighters ranked as the most trusted profession in Europe and the United States with 92 percent of respondents fining them trustworthy. Perhaps it’s all in the job description—being required to step into the face of danger every time you head out for an assignment is not just admirable, it’s downright heroic. 2. Teachers In the same GfK poll that lauded firefighters, teachers ranked second with 83 percent. It’s a good sign considering that the people responsible for crafting the minds of our children are deemed trustworthy. “I think every teacher recognizes that they are part of a trusted profession—that parents

Does money spoil people?

Does money spoil people? There is a saying that ‘money spoils people’, which means that people who become rich also start being rude and nasty. Is this true or not? I do not like categorize people, all stories are different. Probably everyone knows someone who is rich and nice person, and someone who is wealthy and horrible…What can determine behaviour of these people? copyright:http://theundercoverrecruiter.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/money.jpg 1 .     First of all how they got their money. Some people are rich because they won the lottery and some of them because they are genius who made a discovery of new, brilliant solution. There are also ones who are rich because they inherit all wealth from their ancestors… It is not a rule, but I think that people who work hard for everything what they have are more stable and realistic than ones, who don’t need to do anything because they got everything for free (without dedication or hard work). They won’t probably understand
