GMO food

At the beginning I would like to write something important about genetically modified organisms (GMO). There are organisms which was modified by techniques of genetic engineering and have new and physiologically different features from their parental counterparts. The most often the whole process is associated with new gene which is entered to another organism. Lot of fears are coming because of various reasons. Foreign gene which originates from another species (for example bacteria, viruses) may be entered to another species (for example plants, animals). It can contribute to get desired features. There are many followers and opponents of this issue. Similarly we often meet with some advantages and disadvantages which attack us from Internet, TV or newspapers. We aren't aware of usefulness this phenomenon. I would like to describe a few examples of goodness and evil of GMO.

Advantages:

- modifications of genom can contribute to increased resistance of plants against climatic factors (frost, high temperature, drought, lot of UV rays)
- we may allow on higher yields of plants in the case of bad soil conditions
- reduced use pesticides
-  better taste and aroma of fruit, vegetables
- we can enjoy longer durability of food. It has a big meaning in transport.
- decorative plants have prettier colours and stronger smell
- modified plants are used in biofuels. For me it is a big plus due to nonrenewable sources of energy
- we are living longer because of lots of medicines which are obtained by modyfied organisms (for example hormon insulina) or important studies on diverse kinds of illnesses

Disadvantages:

- we don't know anything about side effects of using GMO food and products.
- a lot of people are allergic to proteins which are produced by modified plants
- GMO food has lower quality of nutriments than unmodified counterparts

Some time ago in Poland there was a loud protest against GMO. Everything ended a law about banning GMO from 28 January this year. Mainly fought farmers, beekeepers and environmentalists and celebrities.

Obviously I would write about advantages and disadvantages indefinitely. But pluses and cons of utility of GMO depend on our beliefs and thinks.

Do you think that this issue can be unethical?
What do you think about genetically modyfied organisms and food?
Do you agree that in Poland should not be crops with GMO?

  1. For me, the problem of GMO is not an ethical problem. Of course the fact that we do not know about its' influence make using GMO dangerous. Everyone has his own opinion about it and it should be respected. For example if the government allow to introduce that kind of food on polish market, there should be an information about this products' origin.

  2. I also think that GMO food isn't an ethical problem. The most important thing connected with this issue is an impact on our health and the consequences after eating this kind of products. It is obvious that everything which is natural is better for our health, but we want to have nice fruit and vegetables and also our need is higher. It is still something new for a lot of people and we don't know everything about it. Because of small knowledge there are lots of different opinions about it.

  3. In my opinion, GMO isn't an ethical problem, too. I think the good thing is that so many people dared to protest against GMO food. This shows that they are not indifferent to the issues related to our health. I can't clearly say whether this food is good for our health or not. I think that if scientists conduct more research and it turns out that it is healthy, this food shouldn't be banned. The problem of GMOs, is in my opinion the biggest problem with the impact on our health, our future, not an ethical problem.

  4. Personally I think that GMO food isn’t required people to live. First of all, there are produce more food than is necessary and surplus are wasted because of legislation. Moreover we don’t know how GMO food affects our health maybe it has negative impact. There should be conducted research on influence GMO on human body.

  5. I agree that GMO has many advantages and this idea sounds really good. Personally I a little bit afraid of it because of all this disadvantages with was mentioned. However I suspect that we can't stop process of produces new GMO. I think just economic element will win because this kind of food is cheaper than natural. Of course they will stay shops with ecological products, but it will be in the minority.

  6. I don't need color fruits and I don't need carrots bigger then normal. I think that food should be healthy, in particular vegetables.. we don't know a lot of about side effects, but we know that a lot of people have allergic to proteins in this plants - this fact show us that it could be healthy. Secondly "GMO food has lower quality of nutriments than unmodified counterparts" - it is the most important reason, why we shouldn't product GMO food.

  7. GMO it isn’t good idea for polish citizens, we must going to ecology food and development that part of our economy. We have a against information about GMO one part of scientists think it isn’t unhealthy for live and second part conversely.
What we can do with that ? what we chose. I think we must stay with natural form of food.

  8. I don't think that GMO is a unethical phenomenon. It is science which can help us. On the other hand when I have a choice to take GMO free products I prefer them. In my opinion GMO should be use in Africa for example where plants cannot be cultivated. In Poland it is not neccessery.

  9. I also agree with my previous speakers that GMO is not an ethical problem. The main problem is what influence on our body and our health have genetically modified products. It is hard for me to say if I'm for or against GMO because in Poland it is still something new and people, including me, don't know much about this problem.

  10. To be blunt: I don't see the problem at all. I could not find anything conclusive about either advantage on people health or disadvantage of GMO food consumption. But all the points about improving resistance of GMO food had me sold on them. With all the problems with cost of food, I think that this is just 'a waiting game' between hungry people and stored GMO foods ;). To summarise, I don't think of this issue as problem with ethics.
I also hope that maybe people in Poland will finally stop being opposition to anything that comes out. That includes modified crops and I hope that they will be allowed freely (with marking that they and products made of it are GMO).

  11. In my opinion gmo food is simply kind of artificial food and it can caouse some sideffects, so that i think it is not good idea to use it ni Poland, where we have natural good relatively healthy food. As someone said, in poor countries eg in Africa, it can be kind of helpful, but on the other hand, the civilization isnt developed here and I think there can be a risk of some unexpected reactions among habitants of this undeveloped countries.

  12. I think that we should wait for further detailed studies. Today GMO's impact on our health remains unkown. It may be very helpful for countries with dramatic level of hunger and there it should be allowed. But we must still remember, that tampering with nature can be very dangerous.

  13. For me GMO it's not something bad or not. I understand that there are lots of discussions about it because the main problem is what influence on our body and our health have genetically modified products. There should be conducted research on influence GMO on human body.

  14. i don't think it's unethical. I'm for GMO. It's well worth testing it. I think we shouldn't decline importance of GMO just because we don't know if it's 100% safe.
I believe that modifying nature cannot be without harm to our ecosystem. This concerns me more than its impact on human health.

  15. I think that GMO is an ethical activity- when we use it for humanity’s good, for example a decrease of starvation. I don’t know if GMO is really safe or dangerous, but for me is rather O.K.
In Poland, we should concentrate on ecological crops- we have regions, where soil is suitable for it; GMO crops should be better used in poor lands.

  16. I think to see the GMO influence on us and planet we have to wait some time. To see effects we have to for example eat GMO product what is weird but I don't see another way.
Maybe 2 month ago I made GMO bacteria in lab on my direction. It isn't difficult so why it should be forbidden when we can use genetical engineering in proper way producing insulin.
I think that what we eat - GMO plants should be forbidden. A example with insulin is a answer how to use GMO.

  17. I agree with others, sensitive issue which is gmo shouldn’t be assess as a an ethical problem. The main problem should be connected with influence on our body, health. For me genetically modified food should exist. Something artificial never be as good as natural products. Moreover, I don't know much about this problem but at the moment, but I’m still against. Fruits and vegetable should be natural without any specific and artificial content.

  18. The general idea of GMO is good. It can improve lives of those who do not have food. It can reduce the hunger and it can be used in many ways. Firstly, however they should be tested scientifically. But, are they really worse than any of those chemical supplements added practically to every of foods?

  20. I am not against GMO, I'd rather say I support it. Soon the World will be overpopulated and traditional agriculture will be insufficient. But now we have means to help fighting with hunger. We should use it.

  21. We don't know anything about side effects of using GMO food and products? Come on...
We modify plants, we modify grains since 19th century. Moreover, one hundred years ago we used for that X-rays, radioactive and chemical substances. And effects of them were visible after the operation. Nowadays with GMO we can plan and predict effects of modification better than couple of years ago. If we weren't afraid of modified food yesterday, why we are afraid today?

  22. I haven't read about GMO before and I wasn't even interested in that issue. This presentation points more advantages than disadvantages. And it seems to me as good deal. However, this whole GMO issue seems to me as a little media and political propaganda. I'm sure that if it wasn't so hot topic, Doda wouldn't even say a word.

  23. GMO is not dangerous itself, but it's dangerous for enviroment. Getting genoms modified in natural way are getting changed far slower than in novaday technologies, so nature have time to adapt. Today, we can easily destroy balance in enviroment just by making some plants better and better.

  24. GMO is very trendy topic, but unfortunately there are lots of myths about it. In fact GMO is an organism which has in it's genotype extraneous DNA, and in its true colors almost everyone of us is GMO (every virus infection takes effect in changing our DNA). People are afraid of genetic because they don't understand it, just like it takes place in case atomic power station. The true is that in our times (when Earth can't feed all her inhabitants) GMO food is the only way to stop hunger - great example is "golden rice", witch saved thousands of people in China from death and blindness. GMO also enables to make great numbers of medicines - making a simple genetic transformation we can produce almost every protein. Of course we can not forget about genes therapy, which seems to be for now one of the best threating methods for some cancers. I think that GMO is a great hope for our wrecked planet.

    1. Did you hear controversial story about soybean cultivation in USA ? Genetic code modification allow soy to get resistance on many chemicals used in agriculture. The most controversial point come from randap. You know that item? It is really popular in Poland. It kill everything green dramaticly fast, denying growth for years in the same time.
So U.S. are the largest producer of soy on the world. Evry produc with soy come from U.S. in some part.
Do you belive, that even if soy dont die due randap, it will be not affected by it?
It is up to you :)

  25. The problem with GMO is that we don't know much about it.

I really enjoy the food which look and taste nicely - I simply don't think whether it had been modified or not.

Still no one proved that GMO is harmful for us - until that, don't worry!

  26. I'm afraid we need GMO in order to make food for everyone. There are so many people in this world, and very many of them are starving, that we need to make as much food as possible.

GMO might be unhealthy, but so is everything else. I'm sure that in a couple of years, our bodies will get used to the chemistry changes if we make them slow.

I don't think GMO is unethical because the intention is to make more food. The unethical thing is making people pay for food. This turns making food into a business, which is very bad for everyone involved.

GMO is not the best solution, but it's the best one we have. Personally I prefer eating plastic food than not eating at all.

  27. The problem of GMO is not an ethical problem. If this is an ethical issue, then there should be no problem. We should use the achievements of science, so if it is healthy, we can eat that. But I can not imagine eating chicken in a nutshell or "broccoli powder"..

What is my opinion about GMO? I do not judge. I does not rule out. But in my life I'd rather eat natural food.

  28. I don't think about GMO as a problem.
I know that times are changing and so is world around us. With GMO is more likely to feed the people which are living in areas where is food problem because of climate.
Also I can't admit, that I have full trust to food which is not GMO, like from markets or farmers. I'm not sure on what it grow up and so on. GMO food have atests, I know that I'm eating something which was controlled by people who are known in this.
Apple with more vitamins? I don't have problem with this.

We are scared when we see something that we don't understand, that's all.

  29. To be honest - I would wait for further studies, we don't know yet how remains GMO's on our health.Tampering with nature can be dangerous and we should be careful. Personally, I don't want to eat genetically modyfied food.

  30. I don't want to eat modified food. I don't understand the idea, especially in Poland. I thing we have good field, our vegetables, grains, and fruits are good and cheap. Why? We don't know much a lot of GMO effects. We have enough food, maybe we should stop eating and wasting so much if we are worry about hunger in future.
It is business for me, another kind of capitalistic thinking, and because of that it is ethical problem.

  31. Do you think that this issue can be unethical?
What do you think about genetically modyfied organisms and food?Do you agree that in Poland should not be crops with GMO?

I don't think this issue can be unethical. Why? Someone suffers because of it?
I think for now there are more advantages than disadvantages, but still we don't know all about this, so I would not buy GMO. I think it should be tagged and everyone should know is it GMO or not. People should have choice, do they want to buy GMO tomato or tomato with higher quality of nutriments, but pesticided. So there should be GMO crops in Poland.

Single-sex education

A little bit of history Single-sex education was traditional and dominating form of education till 19th century. Almost all schools and universities were single sex, which in almost all cases meant – men’s schools. This situation started to change because of two reasons: emancipation of women (fight for equality) and introduction of massive education. The first mixed-sex boarding school in UK was formed in 1818, it was Scottish Dollar Academy, and in 1878 the first university- University College London, allowed women  to enter on equal terms with men. What is interesting, the first Cambridge collage, which admit men and women was founded only on  1964. Pros and cons The topic of single-sex education is quite controversial. Like always there are pros and cons, some of them are quite irrational, other have a scientific background. The most popular arguments for single-sex education: 1. Boys and girls are learning in the different way, so they need different progr
THE MOST TRUSTED  PROFESSIONS Many people say that their job is important for our society, but is it a trustworthy profession? A market research institute asked people about trustworthy professions. Here you will find its results. The Top Five Most Trusted Professions 1. Firefighters A 2009 poll conducted by market research institute GfK found that firefighters ranked as the most trusted profession in Europe and the United States with 92 percent of respondents fining them trustworthy. Perhaps it’s all in the job description—being required to step into the face of danger every time you head out for an assignment is not just admirable, it’s downright heroic. 2. Teachers In the same GfK poll that lauded firefighters, teachers ranked second with 83 percent. It’s a good sign considering that the people responsible for crafting the minds of our children are deemed trustworthy. “I think every teacher recognizes that they are part of a trusted profession—that parents

Does money spoil people?

Does money spoil people? There is a saying that ‘money spoils people’, which means that people who become rich also start being rude and nasty. Is this true or not? I do not like categorize people, all stories are different. Probably everyone knows someone who is rich and nice person, and someone who is wealthy and horrible…What can determine behaviour of these people? copyright:http://theundercoverrecruiter.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/money.jpg 1 .     First of all how they got their money. Some people are rich because they won the lottery and some of them because they are genius who made a discovery of new, brilliant solution. There are also ones who are rich because they inherit all wealth from their ancestors… It is not a rule, but I think that people who work hard for everything what they have are more stable and realistic than ones, who don’t need to do anything because they got everything for free (without dedication or hard work). They won’t probably understand
