And the winner is!

I think everyone of you knows something about film awards such as Oscars.

Oscar – Academy Awards. Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was first awarded in 1929. This is a film award. Nominated for this prestigious award are films whose premiere took place in the preceding year.

Oscars ceremony is held every year. The nominated films are mostly American, but there is also awarded a prize in the category of non-English films.

A piece of history

The first award ceremony took place in 1929 and lasted only 15 minutes. It was attended by only 250 people. The publicity brought them to the press and media. Until 1940, the results were given at 11 p. m. at night gala. Resigned of this when a Los Angeles Times published the names of the winners before the gala.

Statuette

The statuette represents a knight with a sword standing on a film, which has five holes, symbolizing the five occupations in the film industry: actors, writers, directors, producers and technicians. It weighs about 4 pounds and is about 35 cm high. It is made of tin, antimony and copper and is covered with gold.

As I mentioned Oscars are awarded mostly to American productions. On each ceremony is a lot of celebrities who are well known to all.

By the way, this is a great fashion show on the red carpet.

The surprise this year was certainly Oscar for the best film, which received virtually nobody known Michel Hazanavicius for the film "Artist". Unfortunately I have not seen the film yet,
but I think that it got awards and nominations because it is different from all. This film is dumb, black and white so drew attention of many people.

My friends who saw the film, said that it isn't well made and compared to films from the 20 and 30 falls pale.
Giving this as an example I would like to hear your opinion.
Do you think that the statuettes are awarded for the quality of a movie or a person's good advertising and publicity?

  1. In my opinion, of course the statuettes are awarded for the quality of a movie.
It's often popular situation when very good movies don't have enough money for professional advertisement and promotion. So that's why that category shouldn't be taken into account.

  2. First of all, I would like to say that I am person who very like a good movie.
Secondly, in each year I try to see all of films which are nominated to Oscars as well as in each year I feel a little bit disappointed. I wolud like to underline that the level of Oscars in this year was not high in comparison with year ago.
The next aspect which seems to be sad is influence of money, advertisement and promotion. Sometimes really good actor didn't receive because he was not well known.
What is more, there are actors who have never received Oscar and they really deserve for them like Leonardo DiCaprio or Johnny Deep. However, they had a lot of great roles.
So I think that Oscars are very subjective and not always fair.

  3. I like watching very much Oscars and i try to do it every year, what is more i try to see all movies which are nominated before the gala. But in my opinion this award shows us not the best movie but movie which is the most recognizable and has the best marketing and promotion.
Not only are the Oscars movie industry but also this is a good market for designers etc. One of the most important things on the gala are women strolling the red carpet and wearing beautiful creations.
I think that the Oscars are worse from year to year.

  4. I agree that Oscars are very prestigious awards. In my opinion most of this awards get people who shouldn't win - why? because sometimes special commission doesn't judge good plot, but only take into account poeple who made this film, actors, producers. Commission measures not talent, knowledge and abilities, but thickness of wallet and level of aquinatnce with business and movies world.
Of course there are some cases that this award is a right decision. As author mentioned, we often forget about unknow movies, from poor country, which are more ambitious and even much better than american.

  5. Oscars are certainly the feast of world cinema. Fans are waiting all year for this one evening to find out who will win the gold statues. As it was mentioned before Oscars are not very fair. Recently it is said that it becomes a political prize. This year in category 'Foreign Language Film' were nominated films from Poland, Belgium, Israel and from Iran. This last had won, what was commented as a political phenomenon rather than cinematographic. The Poles didn't hide their disappointment, but on the other hand, the nomination was already a great honor and the possibility to promote Polish cinematography.
We can only believe that maybe next time the jurors will appreciate the Polish film, the Polish director or actor and Poland will win this prestigious award. ;)

    1. Margaret, I can't agree with you. 'A separation' can not be treated as a political phenomenon. It is a masterpiece aprreciated by many connoiseurs of cinema. The Holland's film "In darkness", although is quite good, in my opinion didn't deserve Oscar.

    2. Greg, I don't say that I consider award for Iranian film as political phenomenon. I am just quoting some opinions.:P And issue, which from those movies really deserves for Oscar, is debatable.

  6. I agree that Oscars are very important awards. Most of people who receives this awards think that they must be the best... meybe but not always. I try to watching Oscars every year and very often I watching awards movies and I think that most of them are very good, iteresting, inspiring, funny and sometimes cliffhanging. In this year I wath the nominated film " The Descendants" it was very touching.
But Oscars are not only for films.
I'm waiting to awards for polish film :)

  7. I'm not keen on films and that's why I'm not very interested in Oscars. Of course, I know that they are the most important awards and that Meryl Streep is really great actress. I like sleeping, not sitting in the middle of the night and watching the Oscar's ceremony ;)
Ach, and I have seen "Hugo" which had won a few awards - I haven't seen anything special it it.

  8. I haven't seen Oscar's ceremony this year and I regret it because I think that it is very prestigious award. It's nice to watch all famous actresses, stars in their beautiful outfits, amazing hairstyles etc. I know that this year Polish film 'In darkness' was nominated but unfortunately we didn't win. I think that it's really a pity because this is very good film. But maybe next year we would be more lucky...

  9. In my opinion, Oscars are very prestigious awards because of their long tradition and history of course.
But currently, most of prizes get movies which have a good promotion, with good actors and high budget - it is not fair in my opinion.
In the other case, I think it is good idea to get statuette in category of non-English films. I was verry proud and happy that Agnieszka Holland movies get nomination to Oscars but it was even obvious that she wouldn't get this prize.

I hope that one day the policy of handing out Oscars will change, and really good movies will be nominated and appreciated!

  10. I think that Oscar is a kind of prize that every actor would like to get. However I think that recently oscars go to people who make movies for a lot of money, who involve famous actors. Morover when I see the reaction of those who get Oscars, for sure I can say that it is so unnatural. The try to show that they didn't expect the prize. But everybody knows who is going to get the Oscar a few months before..

  11. Of course, Oscars are very prestigious awards, but I think it's not so important. It reflect on homogenous group of people's tastes. For me, such galas like Oscars is only about fame, If we want to see really good movies, we should rather follow film festivals like these in Venice, Cannes or Berlin. In my opinion the bigest failure of last Oscars was the nomination of Tree of Life. I've never seen such a ridiculous film:)

  12. Nowadays you can seek to get an award in every area whatever you're good at,some will be more and some less important. I think that Oscars are one of the most prestigous and important prizes for actors and it's so loud about them because they are given to famouse people -not neccessery to those who should win:)

  13. I agree, that Oscars ceremony really prestigious award in film industry. Everyone director, actor, scriptwriter dream about it, but in my opinion the most important award is that which grant people, not Academy. In fact "the world of film" is small, an very often everybody know each other, so someone from Academy can guided by personal sympathy to the creators of the film, so can be no objective about a film.

  14. I have never believed that Oscars are given to movies for its quality - sometimes I tried to watch the winner and it was worse than other movies with nominations! Personally, I think that Oscars are just a big show for celebrities where they can simply show off. I say that maybe because there are too few Polish movies which won the award...

    ReplyDelete
  15. As for me, Oscars is another pompous American holiday. Prizes are not awarded accordingly. The jury is made up largely of Americans. Mostly they perceive their productions. When it comes to the production of non-English does not have the end objective assessment. So much of me.

  16. Oscar isn't indicative of quality films. A good movie defends itself. This award gives prestige and writes film in cinema history. Critics are going by their own taste and the verdict is always the result of subjective judgments. It's normal. Verdict always arouses emotions and causes discussions. In this way we talk about contemporary cinema. But a prize-giving ceremony is extremely long and boring ...

  18. In my opinion Oscars have nothing to do with a great productions. Academy Awards ceremony it is very important cultural event, when a lot of stars can show theirs brilliant dresses and new partners on the red carped. I don't think so that productions, which was nominated to the Oscar are really good. A lot of them are at least ordinary. I agree with Maciej Piotrowski - ,,it is a big show for celebrities".

  19. Unfortunately I haven't seen the Oscars ceremony this years so I am not able to discuss about it as much as I would like to. I heard that our polish film was nominated, but we haven't won, its a pity. The most interesting thing is that the winner was iranish movie, so it's proof that person's good advertising and publicity doesn't guarantee winning the Oscar. If I had to show more proofs I would like to state, that a lot of well know and loved by people actors, such as Johnny Deep or Leonardo di Caprio haven't won this prestigious statuette. In my opinion it means that its a good quality of movie which mostly means about winning.

  20. I have never known that Oscar is a knight :D I used to think, that this statuette presents just naked, golden person. And this sword! Who saw it before the reading this blog? xD

Single-sex education

A little bit of history Single-sex education was traditional and dominating form of education till 19th century. Almost all schools and universities were single sex, which in almost all cases meant – men’s schools. This situation started to change because of two reasons: emancipation of women (fight for equality) and introduction of massive education. The first mixed-sex boarding school in UK was formed in 1818, it was Scottish Dollar Academy, and in 1878 the first university- University College London, allowed women  to enter on equal terms with men. What is interesting, the first Cambridge collage, which admit men and women was founded only on  1964. Pros and cons The topic of single-sex education is quite controversial. Like always there are pros and cons, some of them are quite irrational, other have a scientific background. The most popular arguments for single-sex education: 1. Boys and girls are learning in the different way, so they need different progr
THE MOST TRUSTED  PROFESSIONS Many people say that their job is important for our society, but is it a trustworthy profession? A market research institute asked people about trustworthy professions. Here you will find its results. The Top Five Most Trusted Professions 1. Firefighters A 2009 poll conducted by market research institute GfK found that firefighters ranked as the most trusted profession in Europe and the United States with 92 percent of respondents fining them trustworthy. Perhaps it’s all in the job description—being required to step into the face of danger every time you head out for an assignment is not just admirable, it’s downright heroic. 2. Teachers In the same GfK poll that lauded firefighters, teachers ranked second with 83 percent. It’s a good sign considering that the people responsible for crafting the minds of our children are deemed trustworthy. “I think every teacher recognizes that they are part of a trusted profession—that parents

Does money spoil people?

Does money spoil people? There is a saying that ‘money spoils people’, which means that people who become rich also start being rude and nasty. Is this true or not? I do not like categorize people, all stories are different. Probably everyone knows someone who is rich and nice person, and someone who is wealthy and horrible…What can determine behaviour of these people? copyright:http://theundercoverrecruiter.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/money.jpg 1 .     First of all how they got their money. Some people are rich because they won the lottery and some of them because they are genius who made a discovery of new, brilliant solution. There are also ones who are rich because they inherit all wealth from their ancestors… It is not a rule, but I think that people who work hard for everything what they have are more stable and realistic than ones, who don’t need to do anything because they got everything for free (without dedication or hard work). They won’t probably understand
