Alternative and fun ways to learn new languages.

We all know that the benefits of learning new languages are great. The ability to speak a foreign language opens up a whole new world for us as we can get to know different cultures and different people, travel, study, work and live in different countries.

Learning a second language also has lots of cognitive benefits. It can increase brain power and concentration, reduce cognitive biases and even delay Alzheimer’s. Above all, learning a second language makes it easier to learn a third, fourth or fifth language.

The benefits are clear but for many of us the problem is not to think about learning a new language but having almost no idea how to do it.
There are many methods of language learning other than traditional classes where you are taught by a teacher. Here are some of them which I think are the most fun, unusual and possibly effective:

1. WATCH MOVIES.

You can start by watching a movie in your target language with subtitles in a language that you speak and understand very well and move on to subtitles in your target language or even skip them. It will make you familiar with the inflection and sounds of a new language. You will also learn a lot of basic phrases so you will understand how the real language is spoken and be able to speak it fluently faster.

2. TRY A LANGUAGE SWAP and teach someone when you are learning.

A language swap is usually two people who speak different languages and practise each other’s language. You can also swap language learning for different skills from guitar playing to baking vegan muffins or sewing a dress. Try searching online forums and language swap sites for people who want to speak, teach and learn on Skype. Look for pages like „Skill trade club” on Facebook and contact people who you can exchange skills with. It is also a great way to make friends and get to know somebody interesting.

3. GET A PHONE APP.

Get yourself an app and use it when you travel, wait for someone or any time you want. Many of the language learning applications are free and offer more than one language option. It is a very convenient way to memorize new words when you are on the go. They are also easy to use, fun and can even look like a game!

Let’s look at Duolingo:

4. TRY TO LEARN AS IF YOU’RE A SMALL CHILD and swap your workbook for a children’s book.

It seems to be a good idea to approach learning a new language through the eyes of a child. You can try children’s books and learning materials (videos, songs) as they start with the basics and break them down into a small fragments of information. Get your confidence by speaking to children in their language when you are in a foreign country. They will understand your basics and will not judge you if you mess everything up :)

I have never used a computer program or phone app for learning languages but a lot of my friends recommend it me, because they think it is effective. When I was abroad I try to speak with foreigners. In that way I met new frind and I learnt new culture. For me is difficult to memorize grammar structures so I do many exrecises

  2. Do you prefer learning a new language on a dedicated course with a teacher or by yourself with your own methods (and if so - what methods)?
I prefer learning a language on a dedicated course with a teacher. I think that my work is more effective when I get a lot of exercises and someone mobilizes me to study. Maybe learning by myself at the beggining is effective but isn't good in the long run.
•Have you ever used a computer program or a phone app for learning languages? Was it effective? Was it fun?
I have never used a computer program or a phone app for learning languages but I'm going to start using it. Many of my friends told me that thanks to this programs their stock of words is richier. It is a good solution to do something useful when we have some free time.
•Have you ever tried to talk to someone from another country in a foreign language on Skype?
I have talked to my friend from Norway on a Skype and it was a perfect experience. Now, when we have some time we talk about everything, of course in English. It is so funny because I don't speak English fluently and my friend also so we can even exchange our knowledge and learn new words. It is interesting to talk with someone who is on the similar level in English.
•What is your tip on memorizing new words or grammar structures fast?
As for new words, I think that writing sentences with this word is a good idea to memorize it. I was practicing it when I was in high school and thanks to this method I have learnt many new words. The second idea is to put a card with new words or grammar structures on the wall or in the visible place. Then I look at them for example in the morning, after dinner and at various seasons. In my opinion, it helps me memorize it and it doesn't slip away from my head fastly.

  3. I think it's good to immersed totally in new language. You can go to dedicated course and also you can read magazines, watch films and so on. But the most effective methods, as for me, it's talking and spending your time with native speaker.
Looks like Skype is intended to help with this, but I have never used this opportunity. Maybe it's because of my fear and shyness or maybe because I cannot open up in front of someone who I haven't even seen in non virtual world. I'm so conservative sometimes, I know :)
I have tried some apps to learning new words or structures, but there is no effect I think. You are trying to memorize something new, but the better is to understand it deeper in your mind. For example, when you are reading a book, new words will appear in it and also you will gain knowledge or will have a lot of pleasure of reading the book. The best way for learning new words for me is by doing something usual, for example, cooking chocolate cake with native speaker :) By the way you can learn a lot of the names of different objects in the kitchen.

  4. I think that both have advantages and it is hard for me to pick one. On a curse I learn more grammar and I can practice speaking, when I learn by myself for e.g. when I watch movies I learn new words, which i would not get to know on a course.
This is the first time i have heard about an app for learning language, I have to look into this, it seems like it could be effective.
I never tried that, but I have a friend who used to talk a lot of on Skype with some people. It help her to be more fluent in speaking.
I don’t have one. But I know that if you watch TV series(without lector) about specific subject area, where a lot of words and phrases repeats, you can learn words without even knowing.

I like watching movies with subtitles in foreign language and in my opinion it is a good addition to traditional learning method of learning language.
I never use any computer program or a phone app for learning languages but a lot of my acquaintances recommend Professor Henry. You can create your own program and rate of learning and program create some kind of punishment if you are not systematic and diligent.
I never try to talk to someone from another country in a foreign language on Skype but I live in a dormitory so quite often I have an opportunity to do it face to face.
When I learn new words I like make file cards. I usually put them to a pocket and read during travel to university. I use to build stupid and ridiculous sentence with new words, it makes them easier to remember.

Have you ever used a computer program or a phone app for learning languages? Was it effective? Was it fun? I think I used such program once, few years ago, but I must try it again. It is something different so we can be concentrate more than on doing lessons on paper.

Have you ever tried to talk to someone from another country in a foreign language on Skype? I talked with people from another country in english by chat "omegle" it was nice experience because I realized that I'm not so bad and I can talk with them without translating.

  8. I prefer learning a new language using a method face-to-face with private teacher. So far I’ve tried it once and it worked very well for me and of course by practising the language with native speakers. Unfortunately it isn’t always possible. I use some online applications on my mobile devices. I found it interesting and also very convenient, when for example I’m on the traffic jam in the bus. I don’t waste my time doing nothing, and I enjoy, sometimes funny, exercises from those apps. I’ve never tried to talk to someone from another country but in fact - I don’t know why. For sure I have to change it.
For me always works a method when I wrote new words down in my notebook. I just can’t learn it in any other way. It takes me a lot of time but other methods are insufficient for me.

  9. I prefer learning a new language on a dedicated course with a teacher because for me is better when someone mobilizes me to study. However, I also listen a lot of music and watch films in foreign languages and I think it helps me especially when it comes to get familiar with the language and its tone. I have used a computer program for learning language but I have stopped use it because I haven’t had enough time to do all the lessons etc. But I decided to try a application which is mentioned in the presentation. I downloaded it and I will try use it. I have tried to talk to someone from another country in a foreign language on Skype. Once together with my colleague were bored and we decided to talk to someone on Skype, of course just for the fun. I think that it was interesting experience. I don’t have any tips how memorize grammar structure, I just do a lot of exercises, but when it comes to words I try to associate them with some things or situation and it often helps me to remember.

    4. I've never had problems on memorizng new words or grammar structures, I like it very much. In my opinion it is easy to memorize. Theory is easy, hard is apply to speaking :D So now speaking is the most important exercise for me.

  14. I think I prefer to learn languages with the help of a teacher, because I need a person who motivates me. I tried to learn English using flashcards but this solution has not worked in my case .
I have never had the opportunity to learn the language by computer program or application on the phone, but I would gladly try to do it, why not?
When I was younger, as I remember, it happened to me that I searched for people from abroad and tried to talk with them in English, but I don't remember if I did this using Skype or a chat. Maybe it is a good idea, but then I had more free time to play in something like this.
If we talk about how to memorize new words, I have no solution. In fact, with the remembering I have no problems, but I have trouble recalling them after some time. I think the solution is to repeat them at any time or to use regularly. It's easier to memorize grammatical structures because we use them more often and, on the other hand, you can just understand them, not only just cram for the memory, what I hate to do.

  15. I prefer to learn languages on a dedicated course, because it's better when you have someone to explain you many things. I have never used any apps or programs to learn English. I only used them to check some English words but not always I remembered them. I was talking with foreigners on a Skype a lot of times but always in English.

  16. I like combine different ways of lerning, hance I'm leaning towards dedicated courses along with watching foreign movies/TV shows as an extra methods. There are heaps of good web sites on the Net, apps or communicator like Skype that we can benefit from them. I rate Anki, which is a great tool that help me to memorize everything I learn. I sometimes skype, but often email with people I met when I was somewhere abroad.

  17. I'm kind of lazy person so I prefer learning language with teacher, because if I will do more exercises I will also learn more. I have never using any application on my mobile phone, but I had in the past some cd's with some english exercises, but it was long ago, when I was a kid. I must say that I've learn many words with this method. I prefer talking with person face to face so I have never using Skype to communicate wit friends from other countrie, but I often write with others in foreign language on Facebook. Oh I must say truly that I don't have a good method to learn grammar, but to learn new words I use little pieces of paper with words draw on it.

  18. I prefer learning with a teacher because I can be sure that I understand everything and if I have some problems I can ask. No, I never used a computer programme or a phone app for learning, but using foreign sites and I watch a lot of movis and clips in diffrent languages. I never tried talk to anyone strange on Skype, not even in Polish. Repeat and try to use in real life and real situation, don't be afraid to talk with foreigners.

  19. 1. I think that I need a teacher to learn new language, because it's really hard to notice what is the most important, and what kind of mistakes you do. But now there is lot of internet courses so maybe it will let me do it in proper way, but on the other hand I'm not that much motivated, so I think that teacher is needed.
2.Yes, I used a computer program and iphone apps. It was a fun, but I'm not sure about effectivness. Because usually when I'm bored I choose games not learings apps. but it's good to improve e.g your vocabulary or idioms.
3.No, I have never tired, maybe because I have many friends from foreign countries and from time to time we meet e.g on a parties and then we talk.but I think having that person could be nice and it will develop my skills for sure.
4.I have to write words. I'm making test, just for me to check my knowledge. sometime ago I was making lot of cards with words but now I'm too lazy for it :)

  20. I love learning new languages. The first foreign language that I have started learning was English, then in High School I have started learning Russian. Right now in the University I have chosen Spanish. I can honestly say that learning new languages is my hobby.
At the beginning I learnt with teachers, I really liked it, thanks to them I have really good linguistic basis, however now I prefer to learn by myself. Most of the time I learn from flashcards, or just by watching movies. Once I have decided to download an app for my smart phone : “English in Business”. I have to say I was really, really glad to use this app. I stopped playing stupid games on my phone, and I stared to do something useful. Instead of just sitting in a bus and watching streets I have started to develop my English vocabulary.
In my opinion the most important thing in learning foreign languages is talking. When I was younger I used to go for a language camps. I have been to England and Ireland. There I have met people from all over the world. I am still in touch with them. Mostly we talk on Facebook, but from time to time I talk to them on Skype. I think that Skype is the most perfect social network for people, who wants to keep contact with people from different parts of the world .

  21. I prefer learning a new language on a dedicated course with a ateacher, because at the beginning very important is correct pronunciation, whats more, teacher can note some fact you cannot notes and understand at the beginning of your education of new language.

I have only used mobile phone and copmuter like translator during the studying and working at concrete language.

I've never tried this method of communication with someone form another country but it sound interesting and might be helpful in study of speaking.

In grammar, first of all, I try to understand method and rules of some part of grammar, because if you only study by heart lots of rules, sooner or later, you will forget some important facts.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Of course, at the beginning it is hard to learn a new language by yourself without any teacher. On a dedicated course with a teacher you can learn the basic information about the language. After that I think it is worth to try to learn it by yourself for example by watching movies with subtitles in this language. I do that and it is really great method of learning! As well as go on the short trip to the foregin country to listen this language and try to understand something. I've never tried using any phone apps for learning, because simply it's not for me. When I have to memorise sth, I try to associate it in my mind with the other word which I know and that's all.
But the best method of all mentioned there is talking with native speaker! It is really grat possibility to check your skills and test your real knowledge. I've tried to talk with my friend's boyfriend who is from US and it was really exciting. Also other meetings with people frome another country are great way to practise your language!

  23. Do you prefer learning a new language on a dedicated course with a teacher or by yourself with your own methods (and if so - what methods)?
I take my language classes with a private teacher and it's a dedicated course, which i guess, works best for me. I get the attention from the teacher and he can focus on me in 100%.
Have you ever used a computer program or a phone app for learning languages? Was it effective? Was it fun?
I used some phone apps to learn phrasal verbs , it helped me to learn them by heart! It was effective because I used it almost everytime I came back home with the bus.
Have you ever tried to talk to someone from another country in a foreign language on Skype?
I do it all the time because I have friends from all over the world. I t's a great way to improve your language skills and know some colloquial expressions.
What is your tip on memorizing new words or grammar structures fast?
Association method. Just try to link the word you already know with the new word in a funny way !

  24. Firstly I have to say that learning a new languages was a quite challenge for me. I have never been good in remember new words or grammar rules. In public school when I had big number of English and French classes I often take a big piece of paper and draw a ‘map of ideas’. I think that it was working because I finally could remember view with new words. Sometimes I was supporting this process with using different colors or even making some small pictures.
I think that idea of talking with somebody through Skype is very good but I haven’t got person I may call to improve my English. Maybe in the future I will try apllications on my smartphones because is seems to be a quite smart solution for remember new words.

  25. I prefer learning on a dedicated course with the teacher and then watch movies and listen to the music. I have never used any computer program or phone app dedicated to learning languages. I have never tried to talk with somebody from a foreign country on Skype but I did it on the phone when my theatre was participating in a festival in India. I also try to talk as much as possible when I am abroad. I don't have any tips on learning grammar or new structures. I have always done it by somehow using it in a conversation or I have just listed to them in movies and TV shows.

  26. I prefer learning new language on a dedicated course with a teacher because then you have the opportunity to ask questions and hear the language which is vital when picking it up.
I have never yet used mobile phone app to learn, exept for a dictionary. I started learning English with a computer program to memorize basic vocabulary. It was really usefull and I look back at it with positive emotions.
I've talked to Spanish and Ukrainian and it was real fun, we were half learning their languages and half trying to communicate in English.
My tip is to focus and find your own way - mine is to write these words and make examples.

  27. I prefer to learn a new language with a teacher, because I don'tt have enough motivation and discipline to learn on my own at home. I once tried to learn Spanish on the Internet and in the beginning it was fine. Unfortunately, with every course it was harder and I less understood. So I think that in classroom with the teacher is easier, because you can always ask if you don't know something.
As I said earlier, I used a computer program to learn Spanish. It was an interesting experience.
No, I've never spoken with a foreigner on Skype, I was always shy.
When I learn new words, I try each of them associated with something in color or select those that are difficult. I have a visual memory so I just need to remind color.

  28. I like dedicated courses as much as learning with my own methods. I really like to learn languages in any possible way. I never used an app for learning because I never had opportunity to do so :) but if I had I would definitely try it. It would be really beneficial when standing on a bus stop I could learn some new words for example. I never talked on skype with foreigners but I was chatting with americans and english people very often. My tip for learning? I memorise words and grammar very often, every ~15 minutes in for example 2 hours, and then revise them day later. It works for me [ at least for now :) ].

  29. I prefer learning languages with a teacher at school. When I do something new I don't feel really self-confident and I prefer asking than make some stupid mistakes. No I have never used mobile phone apps to learn new language. Time to time I use only dictionary to check some words. I have some foreign friends so I use Skype to communicate with them but I prefer facebook ( I feel more comfortable - but I don't know why) :D

  30. I prefer to start learning new language with a teacher, because I need someone to motivate me and make me work systematically. I haven’t used a computer program or a phone app, but I would like to try it. I haven’t try to talk to someone from another country on Skype. I rarely use it. Luckily, I have some experiences with talking to people from another countries in a foreign language face to face. My tip? I like writing new words on small pieces of paper, carry them with me and learn while I travel. Also I like making associations.

  31. I prefer learning new language with a teacher, because I don't have willpower to do it by myself. I tried computer programs but it was annoying for me and I stopped it quickly. I have never tried to talk with someone from another country in a foreign language on Skype. When I was abroad I talked with foreigners and I highly value these experiences.
I have exactly the same tip like Marta. :)

  32. I definitely prefer learning a new language with a teacher in small group of students. This methods which has been listed, for me are good complement, but can’t replace ‘normal’ learning with coursebook.
I haven’t used computer program or app for learning language, but I want to try.
No, I haven’t tried to talk on Skype, but I twice talked by phone, because I had to - it was very stressful and of course I talk face to face with someone from another country.
I’m not very original – I use the same method as Laura and Marta.

  33. I prefer learning a new language with a teacher. I need person who will be motivated me and I need personalized approach. It is important to me because I have problem with courage and I don't like big groups of people. I've never used computer programs or some apps to learn. Sometimes I listen podcasts or I read some interesting me articles. I try to watch films in english with english subtitles. I haven't special ways how to learn new language. Some days everything is harder but some days the same things are very easy.

  34. I prefer learning a new language on a dedicated course with a teacher, because it can help me to make less mistakes and show how to think in this language. Sometimes I learn by myself , for example latine, but in some case it isn't possible.
I used an application for smartphones with italian language. It was a program to learning vocabulary. I can say that it was effective.
No, I haven't. I only tried to talk by portals, language chat and something like this.
I'm always using flashcards to learn new words. for grammar I tried to make as many as possible examples.

  35. I think all the examples u gave can be a great support for learing with teacher but can't be a substitution of it. It is impossible to learn grammar without given rules but on the other hand most of the vocabulary I know I've learnt while watching movies and listening to music podcasts. It is also great possibility to practise your pronunciation.

  36. I agree that to learn third or fourth languages is easier than the second one. When I started learn German (when I known Polish and English) it was easier. When I started learn Latin (my 4th language) it was no problem for me.
The best way to learn language is watching movies with Polish subtitles! I learned a lot. And my friends from computer games :) But the best way to learn is taking a course with teacher and with your own methods (like watching movies, reading a books for children).
I had a computer program to learn, but I wasn't use it too much
I never tried to talk on Skype or something with someone from another country, but I was writing. I learned a lot. The best way, is visit country, where they using a language you learn. This is the best method.
To fast learn words and grammatic - just repeat. This is my way. And associating with known titles, songs..

  37. I love watching movies in english! It's the best way to learn language, you learn how to use phrases and how to pronounce them correctly. But be careful not to memorize any inappropriate words...

  38. I've always dreamt about speaking Italian. I found this really hard to start by myself. For me, for the beginning, course with native speaker is absolutely necessary. However, after you learnt the basics, it's nice and certainly cheaper to use methods you mentioned above. For learning languages I try to communicate as much as I can. It's not a problem because I have got many friends from different parts of the world. I also watch movies with english subtitles, translate lyrics from song that I love. Once I have also installed some apps but i found them little effective. To learn fast all you need is having contact with the language as much as it possible.

  39. When I am learning a new language I prefer course with teacher. For me is the best. Because at the begining you don't know what and how. I used a computer program and phone app but this is not effective. Learning with book is better. I never tried to talk with someone from another country on Skype. But sometimes I talk to them in chat rooms. My first tip is that you need a contact with language. For example chat room, watching films, foreign tours. Second you must hard work .

  40. I think I would prefer learning by myself and attending a course as a supplementary lesson. I overall learn better when left to my own devices, but I could use the help of somebody more experienced to point out my mistakes.
As for learning apps and devices- I used duolingo for a while in order to force myself to practice german every day, and it was quite charming until I grew bored and stopped using it. I haven't really used anything else, but I think I'll go back to using it so my skills don't get rusty.
I don't think I would ever, of my own will, use Skype to talk with someone who doesn't know English or Polish. Taking with strangers intimidates me anyway, so I doubt that the experience would be pleasant in any way.
I believe that the best way to learn any language is to read a lot. That's the way I learned English t first and that's how I got to any level of literacy in Polish. Reading anything helps. Articles, magazines and blog posts are just as good as novels. Then you can move up to audiobooks, where the speaker's voice is loud and clear, and then finally up to movies if you want to. I'll admit I'm not a big fan of watching movies, so I have never used them in order to practice a language before.

  41. I think the best solve is connection of this method. A little self-learning, but in case of doubt you can ask a teacher. I used a phone application and this was bad idea. Sometimes I use sitcoms. Watch and translate! When I was young I called to foreign stranger on Skype to have fun and I had :DIf I had good way to memorize words, I'll have passed more quizzes...

  43. I prefere dedicated course with a teacher, but with a little help from my own methods like watching film in foreign language or do the language swap. I dont't like computer programs like '3 steps to talk in english' and I've never use an app but i think it's effective for many people who love new technology. It's fun for young people, they can connect entertainment with learning. Sometimes I talk with my family in Belgium using Skype. French is their first language but we communicate in English. For me it's the best way to improve language and it's funny experience too.

For me the best way to memorizing new words or grammar structures it's making map of associations. I always match one thing to the other one and find some collocations bewteen.

  44. When it comes to my preferences about learning new language, I prefer private lessons because I have an opportunity to exercise whatever I want or everything which I have problems. With my teacher we can focus on my mistakes and analyse only my way of learning. It is said that working in a group during language lessons create a bigger motivation to talk, get to know some people. Together they can count on themselves and they can be more sociable or open-minded.
Private lessons give me some opportunities to make a conversation. Three years ago I decided to take up German. Unfortunately, I’m too lazy to begin learning on my own. It is so hard for me to start a beautiful journey through the language adventure. That’s why I chose private lessons. After a year hard working I saw the first results. I know German quite fluent and I don’t have any problems with communicating.
Now, when I don’t have so much time to take part on extra German lessons, I learn it on my own. I have used a phone app for learning this language for six months. It is such an interesting way of deepening knowledge because I can practise my memory to grammar or vocabulary.
When it comes to English, I like watching movies. At the first time I used subtitles. The devil’s in the detail.
In high school I took part in school exchange and that’s why I could deepen my knowledge about mainly German but also English. Now I have such a great contact with my new friends from another countries and we chat on Facebook or use Skype to make a conversation. That is a great opportunity to get to know foreign culture and obviously to improve language.
Sometimes, when I had problems with learning vocabulary by heart, I wrote words in English on small slip of paper and explanation on the reverse.

  45. I prefer traditional courses with teacher when it comes to learning a new language. I think that it's better for you when you can practise with a real-life teacher and classmates. However, I love watching films in different languages. I've learned a lot by watching British or American movies and TV series and it was such an entertainment for me!
Nevertheless, I have never tried to talk to a foreigner via Skype. The main problem is I don't have friends who are not from Poland. It's a shame, because it seems to be a lot of fun.
Finally, I'd like to say that the best method of learning new words for me is to associate them with Polish ones which look similar.

  47. In todays world you can do nothing without the language. If you don't know at least two, you have less opportunities. In my opinion all ways to teach languages ale great! But when we are a young kinds there is the easiest to teach language. Even tests show us that small children teach fast and permanently.
I'm an adult so i think that for me to speak English perfectly is go abroad. But now I don't have opportunity like this so I'm trying to watch English series.

  48. I prefer learning new landuage with class and teacher. It motivates me to prepare. Also when you do this you have to speak the language which is very important. I don't belive than someone could learn a new language from the beginning without teacher. For me an effective method to have a connect with language is watching english youtube channels. Phone applications aren't effective because I don't remember about them after a week.

  49. Oh thanks! This is perfect prsentation for me because I have BIG problem with my English and I have no idea what I have to do with this. I am sure that I will try this methods.
I don't know what I prefer, because for now anything delivers me results.
I used a some quiz with words for learning languages. It was pretty cool.To be onest I didn't talk on Skype in any language. New words I learn by "fiszki: :)".

  50. I prefer to learn on a dedicated course, because then I can hear live how it should sounds and I can better learn pronunciations. I have never used apps for learning languages but I heard that it's not really good and effective.
I talked with many people from others countries on skype and on interpals. I think it's good way to improve your language skills and to meet interesting people.
I think the best way to learn new words and grammar structures is pairing them with songs' lyrics. If we love song, we can easily remember its lyrics and meaning.

  51. The best way to learn languages for me is to go abroad and start speaking. It is really important to broke the language barrier, ecpecially when you are shy. When I was at junior hight school I couldn't say a sentence in English because I was afraid to say it wrong, now I feel more confident because I spend a lot of time in England and I had to force myself to speak to met new people. At the begining it was hard but then I could do it without even thinking that im speaking in foregin language.

  52. For sure there are many alternative ways of learning. I always prefer traditional learning. I open a book and I just read. Sometimes I read many times if I have to member something by heart. Other methods don’t influence for me. Many people tell that they write words on the small pieces of paper or they listen how somebody read at loud. In my opinion watching films in foreign language is a good solution but only when we know something and we are able to understand the fable, so this method is not for beginners.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Rather, I prefer the traditional way of learning. But... I happen to teach in a different way. A good way to learn a language is to watch foreign films without polish translation. We learn the pronunciation of words during this. In addition, when I was younger I learned a lot of useful english phrases from computer games. I never used a computer program or a phone application for learning languages so I can't say anything. What about a conversation with someone from abroad, e.g. via Skype? I never tried it, I think it's a little stressful experience. My method for effective and quick learning is write new words on paper. When I write, often I manage to remember them.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I definitely prefer the teaching of the teacher, because the teacher can always help you and explain difficult issues. Never I used apps so I can not judge, but I know many people who have used computer programs and according to them it was effective. As Luke never talked by Skype in a foreign language, but I think it might be useful. My tip? try to learn systematically, doing a lot of notes and repeat several times.

  55. I prefer learning with teacher because then I can speak to him and in fact he's goint to tell me what I need to correct. I had tried some apps like dicctionaries or game "memory" with words in another languages. Years ago I also had been talking with friend from France, he had been trying to teach my how to write and speak in French, but this typical for youths. I thinks, I should call him and ask for help again! For me the best to remember everything is to doing notes, repeat new words, read more about grammar (that's the worst for me), also watching movies and singing in another languages or reading books.

  56. Do you prefer learning a new language on a dedicated course with a teacher or by yourself with your own methods (and if so - what methods)?

I prefer learning a new language by a dedicated course with a teacher. The teacher would show me a proper way of speaking, would teach me grammar, I would be able to talk in a particular language. I wouldn't be able to do it on my own.

Have you ever used a computer program or a phone app for learning languages? Was it effective? Was it fun?
To be honest - I've never used any computer programs or phone apps for learning languages so it's difficult to say. But they seem to be quite popular, so probably this way of learning is effective.

Have you ever tried to talk to someone from another country in a foreign language on Skype?
Yes! I have lots of friends abroad, I try to Skype them from time to time. This is the great way to polish your speaking skills and to learn a lot about other countries. My friend from Brazil taught me some Portugese words and I taught him some Polish.

What is your tip on memorizing new words or grammar structures fast?
There are two great ways to to memorize new words and grammar structures fast. Flashcards and quizzes with my friends.

  57. There is no doubt that I prefer learning languages on a dedicated courses. It’s just easier for me when I can interact with people so my studying is more effective. I think I’ve never even used any computer programs nor phone apps for learning languages. I’m not really into skyping with people I barely know and I’ve never had a conversation with such a person. My tip to memorize new words is to learn them with a friend and making fun of them words and if it’s about the grammar structures you just have to practice a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I prefer learning at dedicated courses because I don’t have enough motivation to do it by myself. I was trying mobile apps but most of them have for free 2 or 3 lesson what don’t let check if it is worth paying for more. I don’t have any non-polish friends so I can’t practice my language skills by talking with them. The only way is writing with people on chats in computer games. I hate learning new grammar structures because for me the only way is just learning them by hart what is hard for me; for words I like flashcards.

  59. Interesting and useful tips. I know a lot of people who improved their English by watching series or films with no subtitles. I have never heard about language swaping. It seems really nice. Not only do you learn, but also make contact with foreigners. If I can give you a piece of advice on learning different language, I would recommend every parent to enrol their small kids (aged even 5) in language classes, preferably for individual ones. Children absorb knowledge quickly and having contact with foreign language from the youngest age will ease their education in the future.

  60. I'm sure that alternative ways which was presented on blog are great to learn language with pleasure. A lot of my friends learn foreign languages by watching films and mix joy with benefit. For me the also it seems to be the best way to learning language. Firstly, you don't feel that you learn, secondly, you don't waste your time when you want watch series and you are more productive. ;)
I think that similar good are the other ways offering in presentation. For example a language swap. But at this method you need a lot of self-denial, which you have so little when you must do it what you don't want... ;)

  61. According to questions:

I prefer learning a new language by myself with my own methods. In my opinion the best method to learning at home is watching films, where people speak in language, which we want learn, with subtitles. This idea is mentioned in this article, but I'm sure, people, who do it, quicker learn foreign language. It's a pleasure way, because we can watch movies or TV series which are interesting for us. Another method is listening songs in language, which we want to learn. Thanks to that, when we do exercises in our books and when we should for example listen the conversation and write what we understand, we shouldn't have problems with this kind of exercises. Good way for lazy people, who like playing computer games is changing in the language settings for the language which we want to learn. But in this case we can learn only a few words for example related to a war, which we don't need.

I've used a computer program for learning English. This program was for learning words. I was learning new and repeating the previous words. Unfortunately, this application was boring and after a short time I stopped using it.

I've never tried to talk to someone from another country in foreign language on Skype. I'm too shy person to do things like that. I was also afraid that I would meet someone, who is rude or say offensive or perverted things.

If I want memory new words or grammar structures fast I write them, not just read or say. And I do it per some days, because I believe it's more effective to learn 3 times for 1hour than learn one time for 3 hours.

But I believe, there are a lot of different methods to learning foreign language. Everyone should check, what is the best for his/her.

  62. I prefer learning a new language on a dedicated course with a teacher, because I'm more motivated then. When I try to learn by my own methods, I always find some other activities.
I've never used a computer program or a phone app for learning languages. But I have to try. Apparently, they help in learning languages.
Sometimes I talk with friends in a foreign language on Skype. They are from another country and I met them on World Youth Day.
My tip on memorizing new words or grammar structures fast is to write new words on small pieces of paper.

  63. I prefer learning a new language on my own. As I'm not really into movies or books I mostly listen to music or audiobooks in a foreign language.I also watch videos on youtube or interviews. I like reading blogs ,about something that interests me, in a foreign language too and I usually look up words I don't understand.

I've been trying to use many apps to learn foreign languages but all of them were not good enough for me.

I have never tried to talk to someone in a foreign language on skype. I haven't had enough courage so far.

When it comes to memorizing new words and grammar structures music helps a lot.I aso try to memorise sentences where the grammar structures are used. I can recommend book 'Gramma to nie drama' by Arlena Witt to study english gramma. Whole English gramma is explained in very easy and accesible way with many examples that are easy to remember.

  64. I really like these alternative methods of learning foreign language but to be honest, I prefer traditional course to learn it. It's easier for me to learn a language in a group, when I have to do some excercises. I memorise a lot when i write something (handwritten), that's why I make a lot of notes. But I know that the world is changing and in the future noone will probably make notes on paper.. I try to get used to it but it's still hard. I think that it's good way for children to learn a language while using apps or playing in groups. Children have an ability to memorise a lot and very fast, that's why we should give them as much knowledge as we can.

  65. I prefer learning a new language on a dedicate course, because I don't think I can learn myself. I have never used a computer program or a phone app. I have never tried to talk to smoeone from another country in a foreign language on Skype, but I travel a lot and when I'm abroud I try to speak foreign language and sometimes I try learn some words from inhabitatnts. When I have to remember something I make notes, index carts or this kind of things.

  66. I have never learned a foreign language on my own, but I think it would be easier for me with a teacher who would explain to me things that I do not understand. When I go by train to school, I like to play on the phone in game, thanks to I can learn new words from Russian and English. I noticed that I remember a lot of words, so I'm happy that I can relax and expand my knowledge.
Yes, I have many friends from abroad, thanks to them I can communicate fluently in a foreign language.
For me it's best to write in the table what I need to learn, colouring it and repeating it aloud. Thanks to this, I use three ways of learning in one. Visual memory, auditory memory and muscle memory.

  67. I prefer learning a new language on a dedicated course with a teacher, but I often try others methods, especially watching films or special application for learning foreign languages. This very funny and easy way to learn especially vocabulary.I never tried to talk to someone from another country in a foreign language on Skype, but I do it in real life. My friedn work in the hostel when we can meet people from other country. In the summertime we often went with them to the pubs or restaurant and we were speaking a lot. My tip on memorizing new words or grammar structures fast is use this words in the sentence in real life because then you have real experience with this words.

  68. Great presentation! And interesting tips how to start a new journey with new language. I agree that watching films (listening songs) in target language can help a lot in basics. I also used such swap language app, not that one posted but still it's something that help you stay involved in learning. If you're lucky enough you can even make friend with someone abroad. And yeah, childish-type materials are really good for learning - it helped me to learn 2 Japanese syllabary that way - I definitely recommend it!

Of course, the others are also good enough - watching films in original version motivates because we hear that our learning works well.

  70. Language is a very important skill nowadays, but as we know, not everyone has ability to learn it quickly and easily. Methods presented above are great! My favourite one is watching movies. I don't know any person, who doesn't like films or sitcoms. What is more, we can start with somethink easier such as cartoons. Reading books is also great way, because we can take a break and look up every word.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I think that learning other language require more than one way. We should mix up all the methods. Going on a course is really helpful, but in fact, when we don’t practise at home, at our free time we learn almost nothing. So while course with teachers should be the main way, we should as well try others methods. Personally I really like watching movies in english. I think it really helps to get familiar with the language. I’m also trying to read books in english, which is a little harder but also teach how to use language. I used to have phone application with language but for me it didn’t work, because I wasn’t motivated enough to use it. But I know people who really enjoy learning by those. My tip to memorizing words fast it’s to write them down and trying to associate them with something. Maybe they sound similar to some other words. Or you can try to find some movie fragment when someone is using this word. It also helps.

  72. I prefer learning a new language on a dedicated course with a teacher. I think that homework is important motivation to do something with this language at home. I tried to learn new language by myself. I used an app to learn. It was fun but I had a big breaks and it was hard to start it again. I think that using app may be effective but you have to use it regulary.
I have never spoken with someone in another language on Skype. I did it many times in reality on my holidays. It was awesome. I think that it is the best option to check yourself without book or dictionary.
My tip for memorizing is writing. I have to write one word by twenty times to remember it. The same is with gramatic. I have to do a lot of exercises. But I like this way of learning however it takes a lot of time.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I prefer learning new language on a dedicated course with a teacher. It provide me with regular and systematic learning. It is easier to motivate myself when I must meet deadlines, do homework and pass exams. By the time I realised it, I have tried to learn new language by myself. I use commonly known app- Quizlet. I had a plenty of new words there and it was entertaining at the beginning. Unluckily, I was sick of it so quickly because it made me bored. What should I add is the fact that hardly can I motivate myself to exercise regularly.
I have never tried to talk to someone from another country in a foreign language on Skype. Nevertheless, I regret not practising it because I find it worthy. There is no better way to learn than practice. Watching films can be up to talking on Skype.
Personally, I believe that flashcards are the best option if you ask about learning new world. Without doubts, doing many exercises and reviewing is also crucial. As for grammar, I have no idea which way is the most efficient.

    ReplyDelete
  74. All these methods are effective but I think they can’t replace traditional dedicated course. We can learn how to speak different language by watching movies, but not how to write something formal or how to bulid 100% correct sentence. I’ve tried learning by app and watching films and I can recommend the second option but if we talk about the first one, I don’t find it useful. It’s a good idea if you just start your journey with new language, then you only revise what you know since years. I find really important finding new ways to fill gaps in traditional process of education. It always widens your knowledge and will make you succesful. Maybe reading books in foreign language can be beneficial- besides learning language you can also get to know with foreign culture.

  77. I generally prefer learning new language myself with books and apps. But it works only on elementary level and then I prefer traditional cours of language with teacher and difficult grammar and vocabulary excercices. But unfortunately language courses are quite expensive.
Even nowadays I use apps for learning languages. I like very much flashcards to vocabulary because it is quite pleasant for me and gives a lot of satisfaction.
Unfortunately I had not ever tried to talk to foreigner by Skype but I try to try to speak a lot when I am abroad and it makes me happy when for example French understands me.
I do not have my own method to learn grammar or vocabulaty. The one my tip are flashcards. Bur I usually learn grammar by heard or through feeling and I think it still works.

  79. I actually prefer to learn the language by myself, at least as long as I'm not struggling with the grammar part. When it comes to vocabulary, movies and games in foreign languages are a great way to learn, as you find and learn many new words if you actually bother to check their meaning. I've used a learining app a few times, but I didn't have too much experience with it. For the little while I used it, it was quite fun, and pretty effective. One of the best ways of learining however is to talk with someone else in foreign language. I often talk with people during video games, or other online activities and honestly, you can learn so much without even focusing on studying. As for memorizing words, repeat them. Repeat them a lot.

I do not use any programs or apps to learn language. I tried but it didn't work on me.
I didn't tried to talk in foreign language on Skype. I do not have any friends from other countries.

  83. I prefer to mix these methods - learn language on dedicated course and improve your skills at home. By working at home I mean watching movies, listening to music, reading news in foreign languages - It's really helpful to know daily, conversional language. Actually I've never used any app or computer programme, but It could be unconvetional way to learn. I'm also convinced the best way to learn is to talk with the others in forgein language - on parties, special events or Facebook groups. It's a great chance to improve language skills and become more confident about speaking. When it comes to learn new words, I don't have magic method - just repeat material until I will memorize all of them.

I think that the most important is independet work. During lessons teacher can motivate and learn about grammar (for me) - everyone must learn words by heart, and use leangue. reading books is more effective than reading articles in textbook, because, for me, the articles are boring. Concurrently books are longer, and are more natural. I have used mobile application, but no longer than few days - I had no motivation. I think that conversation with other person is very helpful, for example during playing in computer games with other people - then people must talk with other to win.

  85. Do you prefer learning a new language on a dedicated course with a teacher or by yourself with your own methods (and if so - what methods)?
    - I prefer to attend to a class where a teacher is forcing me to learn. It's easier to become motivated instead of motivating oneself using an Internet course.

Have you ever used a computer program or a phone app for learning languages? Was it effective? Was it fun?
    - I have tried to use some apps but I am getting bored pretty fast and they were a funny thing for few weeks. After a period of fascination I often leave them and it's not effective in fact.

Have you ever tried to talk to someone from another country in a foreign language on Skype?
    - No, I prefer to talk to someone face-to-face. Especially here, in Warsaw, where there are a lot of foreign students in every public place.

What is your tip on memorizing new words or grammar structures fast?
    - It depends on personal skills. For me the most efficient way is to look on a strange word and try to connect it's pronounciation or spelling with some things or divide a word into two or three parts and connect these part with something recogniseable.

I prefer to learn a language face to face, while talking to someone and trying to answer and repeat. I feel it's the most natural way to learn the language, that is how children start learning and it's pretty convenient for me, because i use languages to communicate with people.

  87. I agree that learning a second language is developing and important. I trained my English by watching TV series because I learn better by listening. It is best to start learning in this way with children's readings or a series that we already know, to know the context. The series also teach colloquial speech needed to communicate. I believe that language learning applications are a great invention, because we waste a lot of time, for example in buses, that can be spent on language learning thanks to the application
