How to get energy boost right before exams?

How to get energy boost right before exams?

It is not a secret that students use a lot of different things to help them learn. Especially during exams' season a need for better concentration, sharp focus and pure energy is extremely big. So what are the boosters students reach for?

Well, number one is of course coffee. It's the most popular hot beverage among students. You can spot students holding tightly precious cups of coffee-to-go all around the campus. Coffee keeps you warm, awake and focused. Especially after long night of cramming or partying. No wonder it so popular. Some people say they cannot live without daily dose of coffee. Caffeine is the component responsible for such wonderful effects. Caffeine acts as a central nervous stimulant. It restores alertness, produces faster flow of thoughts. Caffeine increases the blood pressure, which may to lead to heart palpitation if you drink too much coffee. It can also make you more nervous or irritated. It can also cause sleeping problems. So always remember to control amount of coffee you are consuming - don't forget that caffeine is a kind of psychoactive drug

The other popular energy boosters are infamous energy drinks - Red Bull, Burn, Tiger etc. Who has never tried these? During hard time of preparing to abnormal number of exams using such help might be inevitable. Energy drinks are beverages which contain large doses of caffeine and other legal stimulants like guarana and ginseng. One can of such drink has more caffeine than one cup of coffee. Moreover such drinks contain a lot of sugar, which is not so good for our health. Usually they contain also vitamins - like vitamin B12 - which improves concentration and memory skills.

There is wide range of diet supplements combined especially for students. They contain minerals and vitamins which increases memorizing skills, concentration abilities and helps you learn more efficiently. Some of such medications have within caffeine. So if you normally drink coffee you must be careful to not overdose the amount of consuming caffeine per day.

The other way to restore energy while exams' preparations is power nap. It is a short sleep which ends before getting into deep sleep zone. It is proved that short naps, even 10 minutes, immediately improve alertness and performance. One of the studies shows that a midday snooze helps with information overload, which as I know from my experience might be an obstacle for further learning.

There is also something called caffeine nap. It is a short nap that is preceded by the intake of caffeine. Caffeine need about half an hour to start working in our body, so if you drink your espresso and immediately go to sleep, you will experience the caffeine nap.

There are many methods for getting extra help for preparations for fights with professors and tests' sheets. Student can choose from different means, but is it worth it? Wouldn't it be better to carefully schedule studying time and get enough sleep? So you don't have to drug yourself with caffeine?

What are your thoughts about energy boosters?

Are you fans of coffee and other caffeinated drinks?

Have you ever tried power napping?

Comments

  1. I don't really use the energy boosters - what works best for me is a bit of dark chocolate and some nuts. I love coffee, but caffeine doesn't work for me at all - in fact, I feel more relaxed after consuming it, so I drink it just for pleasure. That's why I also don't use energy drinks - besides their awful taste, reminding me of some weird kind of jellies combined with fruity chewing gum, they don't wake me up. I've never tried "purposely" the power nap, yet my body might be smarter than me, as I often fall asleep while riding a bus back home :)

  2. I never use the energy boosters. I don't like a taste of coffe and energy drinks (energy drinks have "synthetic" flavor for me and it scares me ) that's why I don't drink them. Furthermore I am not a person who learns a lot, I don't like wasting the nights to learn, which is why I don't need any energy drinks. I also have never tried power napping and I have to tell that this is the first time that i hear about it. I don't really understand it. I have many friends who are almost addicted to coffee or energy drinks and they can't live without them.

  3. I'm a coffeeholic! I drink it all the time but not because I have to - like many people say "I'm falling asleep, I haven't had my coffee yet", but because I love how it tastes. I love drinking cappuccino in the morning and espresso in the afternoon. I didn't notice that coffee gives me some extra energy, and neither do energy drinks. I guess it is more like placebo for me. When I have to study I need food. In order not to gain on weight during exam session I eat sliced carrots.

  4. I think that energy boosters can be a good idea for people, who need more energy, for example for learning before exams. Personally, I don’t use them, but I know that they works- my friends and brother drink them and can be more and longer concentrated. On the other hand, these drinks contains a lot of sugar and have a negative influence on our health.
I drink coffee a lot and because of it coffee has a smaller influence on my body- I can drink it like a normal beverage.
I often use power napping for ca. 20 min - it’s profitable, because after it I feel full of energy.

  5. I don't use energy boosters, because I just don't feel well after them. I don't need them to get energy. I drink a lot of coffee, because I like it, but it doesn't impact on my brain or whole body. Sometimes I eat chocolate or jellies during learning, because I need some big portion of energy. The strange thing is that sport gives me energy. Some people will say that I need energy to do sport, not get energy after doing some exercises. I love swimming and after 2 hours of swimming I just feel that I'm alive. I need to rest for 20 minutes, but than I can work really hard. I have tried napping, but I don't think it is the best solution for me. After it the only thing I want is to come back to my bed :)

  6. In this time we have many kinds of energy drinks. They are so popular. I of course try energy drinks, but for me they don't working. I have a problem with falling asleep after drinking an energy drink, but after all, when I learning, I feel sleepy. Coffee I drink very rarely, and only for the taste, not because I think that I will fell awaken. In my opinion, when we feel tired while we studying, we should rest for a moment, take a shower, eat a nutritious meal or do some little physical exercise.

  7. To be honest I have never drank an energy drink in my life. I can't stand the arificial smell of it. I only use natural boosters such as coffee and green tea. Unfortunately, they don't always work for me. Coffee in large quantities makes me nervous and unable to sit in one place for longer. Another way to wake my mind up is cycling, but unfortunately it's not possible in winter time. I've never tried napping, I don't think I'm able to fall asleep in daytime.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I've heard about naps, but when I lie down for 10-15 minutes, I always fall asleep and sleep for good about two hours. So this method does not work for me, and even disturbing. Coffee also does not help me to concentrate on learning. I really like the taste and smell, but do not drink it to concentrate. I think, it be better carefully plan the test of time, than to use the above methods.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Sometimes I like to drink coffee, smoking cigarette - that is great. But I'm doing it for pleasure - for this, one of the best, combination of tastes. For me coffee is not a way to "wake up" because it doesn't work at me in that way. I have never drink those energy drinks - I don't have that needs. When I have to study very long and I know that I shouldn't go to bed, as a booster I use tea. As contrasted with coffee, which gives one-shot of excitation, tea causes a long-term but more balanced influx of forces.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Energy boosters are unavoidable part of exams. They are best friends not only for students but also for hard-working people. They keep us "alive" and help to concentrate. I don't drink coffee at all, but I'm fond of energy drinks, which help me to survive during session. Sometimes I take short naps or take vitamins but recently I discovered my new biggest friend, which is coca-cola. It is proved that sugar helps to concentare and gives an energy for organism, that's why coke which contains a lot of sugar and caffeine helps me to stay awake for long hours.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I try not to use energy boosters too often, but I must say, that sometimes, especially during examination session, it happens that I just can't fight with sleepiness using natural ways. Everyone says that this is almost the worst thing that you can do, but I must confess it, that in such cases I drink usually Tiger or Red Bull (rather Tiger, because it's just cheaper). I can't help it - it's the only thing which really works in my case. Coffee rarely makes me more energetic, because it's too hot - when I think about refreshment, I rather think about something cold. When it comes to this power napping - I heard about that once from my friend, but till now I've been thinking that he was joking.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I always drink coffee and sometimes try to take a short nape, but to be honest, this short nape often extend. In my opinion, there is no council , you need to survive this time the best you can. And next time try to planned your work -then all kinds of power drink will be unnecessary.

  13. In the exam time i prefer drink ordinary café wit milk, my favorite is a latte and cappuccino. We must remember café is unhealthy for us, one a day is enough.
I don't like energy drinks, in my opinion they are bad for our hard. If we a tired we must sleep this is the beast energy power.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Honestly I don't using energy boosters during the exam season. I can't learn by the night and I always have enough of sleep. But I observed that during the learning to the exams I smoke far more cigarettes than normally. So I can say that it's my only one stimulant in the exam season.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Sometimes when I am very sleepy I drink red bull. I do it very rarely. When I have no power or to much work I just do not go for exam or I try to take exam in suitable timetable for my. I hate coffee; I feel after cup of coffee very badly. When I feel tired during learning I take a shover or go for jogging or I take short nap. I don’t trust this energy diet supplements.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I don’t use energy boosters but I am a big coffee drinker. I love coffee for its smell and taste but it doesn’t keep me awake.
I don’t lake the taste of energy drinks. Secondary it scares me how much junk is inside. For e.g. one Redbull contains more than 6 cups of sugar!!! The last and most important thing is that boosters give an massive energy shot but sugar is released to blood very quickly. It causes a fast rise in blood sugar level that drops quickly. So energy won’t last for long and you will feel even more tired after all. It's actually much better to drink a smoothe.
My favorite way to get energy back is to exercise: 30 minutes of swimming or jogging help me stay awake for few hours. And brain get some rest too :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. My favorite afterburner is coffee. It's true that keep me warm, awake and focused. But that's not the only reason why I reach for it - I also love the taste of coffee. Sometimes I think I drink too much of it, so I excluded other boosters. In my opinion coffe is less harmfull than other afterburners like Burn, Tiger, Red Bull. My second way to tiredness is nap. It Is even more fun than a cup of coffee. It would be hard to deal with a series of tests with no way to moments of rest.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm overusing coffee, and that's totally not good for my health, but it helps me to wake up early (i'm totally owl, so i have problem with that) and stay awaken.
There's something strange with me and caffeinated drinks - they doesn't work, however coffee itself is.
Actually i have 3 things that help me with learning - coffee, ciggarettes and fresh air. Or more - fresh, cold air.
Also i don't like naps. Even after 5 minutes of it i'm more tired than i was earlier, so it's totally not effective.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I hate energy drinks. They stinks, tastes ugly and I think they can be dangerous for our health. That’s why I prefer coffee. It’s natural, people drink it for ages. Of course, it’s not working always, but we can’t have everything…
Generally I use simply coffee. In connection with nap it’s not good for me. After 10 minutes of sleeping I fell always like doing sleep further. So, experts and doctors can say, but my organism knows better.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I don’t use any energy drinks even coffee because I don’t like it. It taste horrible for me and I think that is very unhealthy because produce for synthetic components. The best power booster for people is sleep. Before exam it is hard to sleep well but even the short slumber can help.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I don't use any energy boosters or coffee and other caffeinated drinks. I think the best way to get an energy boost for learning is to nourish yourself properly and rest from time to time. Drinking coffee isn't good because of loosing magnesium from body. It is needed for good effective learning. I have tried power napping and I think it is a very good way to improve learning skills.

  22. Coffee and energy drinks have been helping me since high school. There are nights that can't be sleeped because of exam or deadline very next day and you just have to do this no matter what. Without energy boosters in the middle of the night after hours of work and/or studing I would probably say to myself 'screw it, I'm going to bed' becase my mind would be too exhausted. However thanks to caffeine i trick my mind and I'm keeping it quiet untill I finnish my work.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I've try once energy drinks and i don't feel any different. So why i could drink some bad think and it's doesn't work. I didn't drink such thinks. I hate coffee. I drink coffee for 1 year and it's only makes me more sleepy. I emphasize on sport. It's could wake me up :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Try to imagine situations that for a day or two you have a test, and you can't do anything. The adrenaline jumps 200% above normal. And this is the best way to learn everything. With a high level of adrenaline we learn everything in a very short time. Only sit comfortable, drink some energy drink and it is all.

I do not know how the coffee work. I have never drunk this. I have never learned urgently too. But I don't give up.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Sometimes I use the energy boosters, I love a taste of coffee so I drink coffee every day. I don't drink energy drinks because they are very unhealthy and after drinking tiger, for example I have a problem with falling asleep. Coffee helps me when I need more energy, for example for learning before exams. For me the best way to be full of energy is outdoor sport! For example, after running I feel very good, happy and I am geared to learning.

    ReplyDelete
  26. If I know that I have to study really hard for a couple hours,I use some energy boosters. I really love coffee and I drink it a lot,so it hasn't got big impact on me. When I have lots of things to do I try to eat only low-fat food to do not lose energy on digestion. SOmetimes I take a short nap,no more than 20-30 minutes.

  28. I always drink coffee in the morning. It helps me to wake up and start my working day faster. But I don’t take energy drinks as a rule. I do it only in critical situations when I for example fall asleep on lessons.
There is a very good way to turn on your brains. It is called cold shower. And it’s not only safe for your health, but also can improve your physical condition. As good as a shower morning exercises are! So stop poison your bodies and use natural boosters :)

  29. I like coffee, especially when it is well done, for example, freshly ground and with foamed milk. Then, I drink it because of the taste. Generally, coffee doesn't have a stimulating affect on me in any way. Recently, I discovered that a better solution for me is an energy drink, but only Redbull. Not only it has a good taste but it also actually works for me. Therefore, it happen to me to drink it when I feel very tired during the day. On the other hand, when it comes to learning, it's rare when I prefer it to rest. For this reason, I don't need any booster then, just simply I go to sleep, if I am already tired.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I drink coffee because I like the taste of it. Unfortunately, it does not stimulate me in any way. Sometimes, before exams I drink energy beverages but I am aware of the fact that there are unhealthy. The best thing to do to be focused is to sleep a lot, but I know that it is not always possible. Sometimes even a short nap makes a difference.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I have never tried energy boosters. When I have really important exam I drink coffee. But I don't drink it everyday because I would becobe addicted to coffee quickly. When I have to learn at night and I feel really tired I do some exercises or eat something delicious. A hot tea also is good idea for me. Sometimes I do short naps and it helps but not always.

  32. I think there are better ways to have enough enegy and learn more effectively...Long sleep, good healthy food, relax instead of stress, colors on notes, sport. Energy boosters are next step, which isn't so necessary. In my opinion it's more like the last resort.
I like coffee. Instant coffee starts to work very fast, strong, but for a short time. Filter coffee isn't so strong, the effect is evenly distributed in time. It's my observation. I like coffee with milk, it's not so bad idea to drink it if u need it, but be careful - if you drink it too much, you will feel a brain wave. Energy drinks work like instant coffee, but seem to be more unhealthy and additionaly, you are very tired later.
I've tried power napping, sometimes it works. It depends on a person. However, it's hard to decide, which moment is good to wake up. 10 min seems to be to short time. I prefer 45 min or 1h, but there is always a risk, that you will be more tired/sleepy than before. I recommend diet supplements. People don't bealive in them, but they also don't know enough about them. Firstly, we should read a lot and from different sources about the best ingredients for us. Secondly, we should look for them in products online or in a pharmacy. Thirdly, we should use it regularly and a few days/ weeks before learning time.

  33. Quite often I sleep for 2-4 hours at night or have no time to sleep. It's the price I pay for free Saturdays. When I'm studying I drink liters of green tea. I am not sure if it really works or it's just a placebo but it really helps me to focus. I don't drink energy drinks, I hate its smell. I rarely use coffee - if I happen to drink it (usually when I am desperate), I choose cappuccino or latte macchiato - other ones are usually too strong for me.

As my pace of life is rather fast, naps are very important part of my day. At first I tried to fight with my drowsiness, but then I fell asleep on my desk losing 3-4 hours (and ending up with terrible backache). When I feel that I can't stand studying any more I take a brief nap. What is more, if I pull an all-nighter, after coming back home from courses the next day I have to go to sleep for 1-2 hours or else I won't be able to do anything more than vegetating. If it is not necessary I don't stay up late, I try to sleep as much as possible. I know that my lifestyle is very unhealthy, I hope I will be able to change it soon (next term is said to be a little easier).

Someone mentioned that they eat sliced carrot during exam session - great idea! I was looking for a low-calorie nice snack so I will definitely try this one.

  34. The only energy boosters I believe in are natural, like f.e. having some physical activity every day make you feel full of energy. I also recommend drinking cocoa or fruit juice. I drink coffee very seldom, I avoid energetic drinks, the only thing I drink quite often is coke. Power napping doesn't work for me. It's rather making me feel more sleepy and out of energy.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I often drink coffee but not because of delivering energy but for the taste. Honestly I think coffee doesn't give me energy so I drink it only due to the taste which I like. For me the best way to wake my mind up is having some physical exercises. After having some physical activity I am always happy and full of energy. I don't drink any energy drinks, because in my opinion it is very harmful for our health.

  36. I have never tried anything else than coffee, however a lot of my friends drink yerba mate instead and in their opinions it works better. It is not that I drink coffee to not fall asleap and concentrate better I just love the taste of little back with milk and sugar. What is more it seems to me that during examines’ season chocolate works better than coffee. May be it not helps with cutting your sleep hours but definitely make you able to concentrate and work more effective.
When I was in high school I have tried power napping but it didn’t work in my case. I had a big problem to get up and often it ended with slipping from 9 pm to 2 am short shover and continuing sleep to 6 am. It had never helped me in study because even if I was able to get up for two next hour I couldn’t concentrate. Probably major reason for this collapse was that I have sleep to long (it was 2 hours instead of 15-20 minutes which are recommended).

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm at the firs year of study but now I realy understand what exams means. It isn't like in highschool where everyone is helping you now we must learn on our own, so we put this away for few months and then we must learn so quiqly that we can't sleep because day is too short, and this is why we use energy boosters. I don't like energy drinks I drink them only if I'm really tired. I prefer coffie because I like how it taste. I think that sleeping is the best way I don't prefer to learning at the night because it won't bring me success.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Simply, not a fan. I can live without energy drinks - just hate the taste of them, they’re unpotable for me. I’ve never tried power napping before, but I like to take a nap during a day and I love to have a good cup of coffee vevry much. I don’t like studing at last minute, so I prefer to be a bit more diligent and hardworking :))

    ReplyDelete
  39. My favorite method for get en energy boost before studding is having many "cups" of Yerba Mate. In my opinion (at least for me) mate works ten thousands times better then coffee, coca cola, energy drinks, combination of nap and caffeine all together. The big advantage of mate is also that it doesn't disturb a concentration - just as energy drinks do. I sincerely recommend!

    ReplyDelete
  40. During many years, I used to drink a lot of energy drinks like Red Bull, Burn etc. But now, I realized that it doesnt't make me more active. Maybe I drunk too much these drinks in my life. And the most important reason why I left drinking energy drinks is that they are very unhealthly. When I have to learn I prefer coffee, or drinks with guarana. My friend told me that Yerba Mate is very effective energy boost. I must try it. When I feel tired, I also take a nap.

  41. In my opinion energy boosters are unhealthy and don't work (at least for me). I don't drink coffee or any other energy drinks for two reasons. I don't like their taste. And after drinking them I feel a boost of energy for like 15 minutes and then I feel even more tired than before drinking it. I think all we need to not being tired is a good night's sleep and not wasting time.

  43. Well, I don't drink energy boosters alot, but sometimes when I'm sleepy and don't have strength for anything I drink coffe. I'm not sure if it helps well, but maybe a little. I have never tried power napping. Well it's hard for me to get asleep when there is a sun outside. I must have been awoke for something like 40 hours to take nap like that.

  44. The most common thing which I do when I want to get energy are power naps. about 15 minutes of sleeping gives me ot of power and I feel like new born. Sometime ago I drank lot of energy drinks, but I stopped when I felt that my heart is working so loudly. That was a sign, that It's unhealthy so I decided to... drink coffee. sometimes, when I have lot of to learn, not many time I have to drink coffee, it works for a while, but the best way is just to go to bed and sleep. I like to study in the early mornings than stay up in night but it depend on how many work I have to do.

  45. Recently I started to drink coffee regularly. I need extra energy and I really like sleeping so I must have extra energy boosters. I also usually eat a chocolate. I don’t like other caffeinated drinks I think it is very unhealthy and have very bad smell. I sometimes try power napping but often it finish no really fast.

  46. I think that energy boosters don't work, they have a lot of sugar that give us energy but just for a while and if we drink them to much our body get used to it and we have to drink it more and more to feel something. I am not a big fan of coffe, I don't drink it I prefer a tea.
I take a nap almost everyday, especially in winter, it really helps my body and mind to rest for a while and prepare me to be ready for the rest of the day.

  47. Coffee coffe and once again coffee it is my love. Unfortunately it doesn't work for me. Probabely becouse I drink too much coffee. All of the tips are known and helpful but some of them are for me impossible. For example a nap. I can't take it, I have to sleap from 5 houers, if less it's terrible so for me it is better not to sleap at all. I have never try some extra supplements and I don't want to try. I think it's quite unhealfy. Energy drinks are of course too but hey help me so I sometimes drink it.

  48. When I was in high school I have started to drink coffee. I was very suprised, because after intaking it I immediately asleep. Now I know, there were caffeina naps. Now I drink coffe but very seldom- when I am exhausted. Coffee dosen't influence positive on my organism. I am unnaturally stimulated, my hands are shaking, my heart beats very strong. Before exams I swallow diet supplements. It helps me to focus. I think that It's healthier than for example energy drink. Apart from that I use power nap. Effects are amazing! I can study very long. I try do a short nap every day.

  49. I don't like energy boosters like Red Bull or Tiger and I don't understand people who drink it a lot. For me they are one of the worst things which human drinks.

  50. I don't drink energy drinks, cos for me it's unhealthy and full microelements that can damage organism. Also I don't like the taste of it, becase it's often like bubble gum.If I want to back to reality I sometimes drink coffe, but I don't think it helps in every situation. Sometimes I have an impression that it causes sleepiness.

  51. For me a good energy booster is a good sleep. Coffee and other caffeinated drinks can be helpful only for a short period of time, but after that it is even worst. So I don't like to use such things in ordrer to be productive. And power napping only makes me wanna sleep longer, so that's not a good way either, Just simple 6-9 hour sleep at night is the best way to be full of energy and productive whole next day.

  52. I like and i need the energy boosters. I have to drink coffe every day. But not because I'm adictted person but it's going about the taste which make me happier. Coffeine doesn't work on me. I can drink coffe in the evening and have no problems to fall asleep after that.
I can;t take power nap. If I go take a nap im after that more sleepy thane befor taking.

I do not trying . I think it could not be healthy for our organism.
