5 medical MYTHS

There are numerous of medical myths. I would like to present you five of them.

1. A hot tea with lemon is a good cold remedy.

We all know that vitamin C is good for our immune system. Of course lemons and other citrus fruits contain this vitamin (but not so large amounts as we believe...). We like drinking hot tea with lemon during cold because we think it's a good remedy for it. But we should remember that high temperature destroys vitamin C.

2. Pregnant women should eat for two.

Something for moms-to-be. :) It is a very common situation when you are pregnant and your mother or your friend tells you that you should eat more because of a baby. Don't listen to them! The truth is that you need only about 300 – 400 extra calories. Not so much, right? You must be also on a healthy, balanced diet because in fact, you need more certain nutrients.
Eating five burgers and two boxes of ice cream per day can cause an obesity or Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) which are very dangerous for you and your baby.

3. Cold weather makes you sick

„Don't go outside, it's so cold – you'll catch a cold!” My mother used to tell me when I was a child. Now I know that a cold is caused by viruses and bacteria I get from other people, not by weather and temperature. But why are people sick mainly in winter? There is a theory that in winter people spend much more time indoor with others. This environment is perfect for germ spreading.

I have a nice, short video for you about this myth:
(I recommend all AsapSCIENCE's videos :))

4.  Cracking knuckles causes arthritis.

Keep calm and crack your knuckles...  Because not your habit, but the immune system causes arthritis when the immune system cells attack your joints.

5. Sitting too close to the TV ruins your eyesight.

It makes sense if you have one of the first TV sets which emitted dangerous radiation. Now we have quite safe TV-sets and computers. Your eyes can be tired because of sitting too close to the monitor for a long time, but it doesn't cause serious problems with eyesight.

What do you think about this? Do you agree?

Do you know some other medical myths?

  1. I absolutely agree with you about these myths, but not so long ago it was believed that they were true. Nowadays we know that it is nonsense as medicine increased and our knowledge in these therms is bigger than before.I don't know more myths but I've heard that many drugs don't include healthy propetries but use only placebo effect, which influence on our mental fettle

  2. I agree with the author of this presentation. These Myths are so popular in our mind and I think that everyone heard something like these in the past. I read that we shouldn'y drink some kind of tea with lemons, because it is unhelthy And when I was a child, my grandmother made for me a hot tea with honey - after a read that vitamins in honey are destroyed by high temperature.

    1. Yes, when you put lemon to the hot tea (with tea grounds in a cup!) aluminium from the tea will become an assimilable form for our organism and it's dangerous. So - putting lemon to cold tea without grounds seems to be the best solution. ;)

  3. I also agree with the fact that in our society there are many myths. When I was a kid I believed in some of them, for example, that cold weather makes me sick. I understood that it was completely different when I learned about viruses and bacteria, but even so I still dress warmly in the winter :) An interesting myth is that people have more senses than 5 - their number varies between 9-20. People can also feel the balance, acceleration, pain, limb position and the whole body, and many others.

  4. I totally agree with the presentation. This myths are so popular. I used to believe in some of them but when I have improved my medical knowledge, they started to look like nonsense to me. Other myths? Probably I've heard some more of them but now It is hard to recall any.

  5. There is a lot of myths in society, especial medical. Maybe we need to explain some facts in not so complicated way.
I also have heard almost all which you have listed, and my mum still tells me that I am sick because of I haven’t dressed warmly enough...
There is a myth, that reading in bad lighting spoils the sight. It, doesn't work like that, we won’t have a bigger defect.

  6. I know about tea with lemon. Someone told me, that if we want drink a tea with lemon, we should wait a few minutes, because vitamin C is disappearing, because of hot temperature.
Really interesting is about cracking knuckle. That's good that I'm not doing that. I don't like this sound. It's really scary.
About sitting close to monitors. This is really nice information, that it doesn't make serious problems with eyes!

  7. I love medical myths! It is so funny sometimes. Of these five my favourite is second - "Pregnant women should eat for two". When I was on dietetics my lecturer on the first lecture said us about this. She was very surprised that people can think so. However I met so many women which thought exactly in this way. They was very surprised and upset when after pregnancy they put on weight too much.

  8. That was highly interesting. I need to show this to some of my friends, especially about knuckles and lemon tea. I always knew that a slice of lemon in a really hot tea wouldn't do anything to actually kill bacteria. Was really happy to know that in modern days i can no longer fear to sit closer to my TV or laptop monitor.

  9. I agree with Your presentation. It is true that in our minds there are many medical myths. Apparently the story that reading with the night lamp breaks eyesight is also a myth. My friends told me about it. I think it's good news for people who like reading at night.

    1. It's the most interesting thing I've read in a while! Especially a part about cracking your knuckles. I like to do it often, it seems relaxing to me and also I like the sound of it. My mom always grumbles about it, so I'll show her this presentation - let's hope she'll understand... :)

  10. I agree with this myths. I never believe them. It's so natural for me that vitamin c is destroy in high temperature. I always give lemon inside the tea just for teaste. I hope that people will read more articles and since magazines for their konwlaage.

  11. I heared those myths so many times! And people really do believe in this. The thing I heared most frequently was about sitting too close to the TV. I was really scared as a child that I will be blind in the near future because I used to sit very close :) I still think that if my parents read this presentation, they wouldn't believe. And of course pregnant women have a very good excuse to eat as much as their hormones tell them to!

  12. I heard of maybe two of these myths but some of them are new to me. I have always thought that we can get a cold because of a bad weather but now it has sense. I guess my mom is a lier. When I was younger, I used to believe that if you play with fire, you pee at night, but the most stupid thing is putting a fish into a shoe because some people say it cures rheumatism.

Single-sex education

A little bit of history Single-sex education was traditional and dominating form of education till 19th century. Almost all schools and universities were single sex, which in almost all cases meant – men’s schools. This situation started to change because of two reasons: emancipation of women (fight for equality) and introduction of massive education. The first mixed-sex boarding school in UK was formed in 1818, it was Scottish Dollar Academy, and in 1878 the first university- University College London, allowed women  to enter on equal terms with men. What is interesting, the first Cambridge collage, which admit men and women was founded only on  1964. Pros and cons The topic of single-sex education is quite controversial. Like always there are pros and cons, some of them are quite irrational, other have a scientific background. The most popular arguments for single-sex education: 1. Boys and girls are learning in the different way, so they need different progr
THE MOST TRUSTED  PROFESSIONS Many people say that their job is important for our society, but is it a trustworthy profession? A market research institute asked people about trustworthy professions. Here you will find its results. The Top Five Most Trusted Professions 1. Firefighters A 2009 poll conducted by market research institute GfK found that firefighters ranked as the most trusted profession in Europe and the United States with 92 percent of respondents fining them trustworthy. Perhaps it’s all in the job description—being required to step into the face of danger every time you head out for an assignment is not just admirable, it’s downright heroic. 2. Teachers In the same GfK poll that lauded firefighters, teachers ranked second with 83 percent. It’s a good sign considering that the people responsible for crafting the minds of our children are deemed trustworthy. “I think every teacher recognizes that they are part of a trusted profession—that parents

Does money spoil people?

Does money spoil people? There is a saying that ‘money spoils people’, which means that people who become rich also start being rude and nasty. Is this true or not? I do not like categorize people, all stories are different. Probably everyone knows someone who is rich and nice person, and someone who is wealthy and horrible…What can determine behaviour of these people? copyright:http://theundercoverrecruiter.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/money.jpg 1 .     First of all how they got their money. Some people are rich because they won the lottery and some of them because they are genius who made a discovery of new, brilliant solution. There are also ones who are rich because they inherit all wealth from their ancestors… It is not a rule, but I think that people who work hard for everything what they have are more stable and realistic than ones, who don’t need to do anything because they got everything for free (without dedication or hard work). They won’t probably understand
