COMBINING ART AND TECHNOLOGY: DIGITAL ART
Both technology and art define and reshape the world we live in. With the help of technology people are able to create new inventions and make experiments. Technology in art challenges and encourages modern artists to create something fresh, new and builds their creativity. Regardless of what your opinion concerning the relationship between technology and art is it's a fact that technology offers something that young aspiring artists always desired, they have the possibility to discover something completely new giving an opportunity to push the established boundaries. There are many contemporary authors who have decided to try something different and test themselves in original techniques that were impossible only a couple of years ago. Some of them say that their work wouldn't be possible without technology. This authors base their work on presentations of ephemeral and immaterial things.
Nowadays many museums have decided to give more space for digital art and kinetic pieces. This phenomenon leads to change in artworks' nature as many people find this modern way of creating art more intriguing and attractive than the traditional one. There also exist virtual art museums that present the full range of contemporary digital art.
Many artists such as painters, photographers or sculptors keep transforming old, well-known art forms into modern ones following the trends and innovations of today. One of them is Petra Cortright who uses digital tools to create her paintings composed entirely on a computer.
Technology is reshaping what art is and how it's produced. Over the past few decades, art and technology have become more connected than ever before making the proces of creation easier. Have you ever wondered how to build a house that will resist natural disasters in a rapid speed? Andrey Rudenko created a 3D printer that can build houses out of concrete. First he built a 3D printed castle as a proof that it actually works.
Another example that art and technology work incredibly well together: one of the most popular exhibition in London called Assemblance uses computer-controlled lassers to let visitors create light sculptures and draw colorful patterns on the floor. By holding hands and expanding the light streams we can discover special effects that only appear sporadically and only when people work together. The result is an installation that perfectly shows how digital art can encourage social interaction closing the gap between the people and art itself. Their contribution to something that can be created out of nothing shows that everybody is able to make art.
Digital art has its supporters and opponents. Since computers have turned out to be powerful tools for artists many people criticise computer-bazed art considering it as a 'fake' or criticising the ephemerality and immateriality of it.
Does art need to exist physically in order to be considered art?
What qualities should something have in order to be considered art?
How do you think digital art will develop in the future?
